Of course not, the people who live there are British, and as such rely on the British armed forces to look after them. There's no choice involved! We cannot be seen to accept invasion by other countries. Defending that tiny rock is as much a show of force to any other countries who want to get lively as it is about looking after our own. The island also acts as a base for our armed forces in the Atlantic, it's a very useful position to hold because our forces can (and have) be deployed from there far faster than from over here in a lot of cases. In my opinion anyway. Many people believe that because it's so far away we should just give them up, but there are several thousand British citizens over there who need to be defended.
