OK then, but how many people know the difference between 1080i and 1080p? Who would guess that one displays twice as much data as the other one? I just think that it's bringing good technology to the masses. And that's a good thing. Sure, if you're clever and you can wade through the specs and determine that a particular device is 6% better for you, great. Most people can't be bothered with that stuff though.

Most people don't know or care what 2048 x 1536 means though, or 480/720/1080 p/i. Retina just means 'hi res' in a way people can understand without having to be a nerd, surely that's no bad thing?
  3. Whenever you pipe up on here, this springs to mind.

Get an Android tablet if you want one. But to get this particular one because the resolution is slightly, imperceivably, better than an iPad is just a bit silly.

Sort of, Apple calls their screens 'retina' if they're over a certain pixel density. Which is genuinely worthwhile on a phone, and nice-but-not-essential on a tablet (IMO of course). But as you say, there are lots of other things about a good screen that are important (colour reproduction, brightness, viewing angle etc). You have to wonder whether there's really any benefit in having a resolution 'better' than a retina iPhone / iPad, because your eyes aren't able to differentiate the individual pixels anyway. This is surely just specification one-upmanship? It's just about Samsung 'beating' the flagship feature of the iPad.
  6. If a cheat cheats in the woods and there's no one around to see it, is he really cheating?

The other thing that's worth trying is plug the charging cable in to the dock connector. Then flex the cable back slightly - imagine the front edge of the dock connector is basically behind the home button at this point. Just do it gentry and retry the home button. I was amazed to see that this actually worked on my iPhone 4 - the home button had basically become unusable, it's now 100% again.
  8. Only watched this today - well impressed! You just looked dead smooth and consistent the whole time.
  9. Ben - the reason I suggested this thread was because I couldn't see any of the videos on the blog. Too many embedded videos all trying to load at once = fail. You've just recreated the same problem on here! I can only reply by temporarily disabling javascript, but I'm going to disable the embedded videos in your post. I think with so many videos, we should just have html links rather than embed the video.I've added the code tags to your post so it won't try and load all the javascript. Can you re-post all the videos with links? Thanks - and sorry for being a pain. I'm sure I can't be the only one with problems! Shercofray - thanks for trying to do this thread. I think you should be able to find all the links within Ben's post. Also I suggest adding in a bit to your top post to list the winners, too EDIT: Apologies if I've borked the links. Dunno how that happened.
  10. Can someone make a topic with links to the winning videos? I can't see them because the competition page is way too video-heavy and keeps crashing Chrome. (Also I can't find the entries on the page because the titles of the videos are inexplicably images so I can't search for text?)
  11. Joe, shush! Otherwise people will think weird thoughts like 'sore loser' etc.
  12. It's possible. What I'm saying is that you should only look at cars when you've checked insurance quotes first. Insurance companies have lots of ways to 'risk stratify' drivers based on their age/where they live/job etc. Each car model has a risk profile associated with it, and it's not necessarily based on power output, it's not based on how much the car costs second hand. Some cars are weirdly cheap to insure, even though they're technically a higher insurance group. It's just a hunch but some of the small hatchback city cars most people drive as a first car can be pretty nippy and fun to drive = more accidents. Get something massive and underpowered and I bet it'll be cheaper. I'm sure someone on here said the cheapest quote they could find was in a Ford Mondeo. Having said all that, it's a few years since I was 17 and I never paid more than £600 for my insurance. With the average price now being around £2k, I may be somewhat out of touch. Which is fine by me, since my insurance is way cheaper than yours
  13. On a first car, the cost of insurance for a year alone is likely to cost more than the value of the car. If you keep the car for 4 years, the cost of insuring it could easily be £6-8k. Getting a bargain car for £500 rather than £700 is insignificant if it's more expensive to insure.
  14. Your tax free allowance is just over £8000. If you earn less than this in a single year, you shouldn't pay any tax. If you earn more than this, you'll pay tax on it, this will be spread out over 12 months. You don't earn £8000 and THEN start paying tax, it's worked out on a pro-rata basis. You will pay national insurance, I think it's unavaoidable. If you start a job and the tax code hasn't been properly set up, you'll pay 'emergency' tax at a flat rate of 20%. This is because you may, for example, have another job meaning in total you'll earn over the tax threshold of £8000, but HMRC don't know the exact situation. However, if you don't have any other earnings/income then this tax is wrong and you will be able to claim it back. Once a tax code becomes established, HMRC will usually just decrease the amount of tax you pay over the coming months until they owe you nothing. The best thing to do is to speak to payroll at your workplace. They'll be able to tell you where they're up to in getting your tax code sorted properly. If you're due a refund, speak to HMRC, I've found they were pretty helpful in the past. The emergency tax code for this year is 810L. You should probably be on 747L (assuming you only have this one job).
  15. Alright, calm down everyone. Yeah, I think the signature is massively lame too, but who really cares?
  16. What a charmer you are.

    Head Injuries

Non-specific neurological symptoms are quite common following head trauma - even without structural abnormality on a CT scan (I presume you had one?). Essentially if you hit your head hard enough there are changes in the brain which won't necessarily show up on scans but can cause problems in the following weeks/months. All I can say is that it's not necessarily unusual and is likely to improve, although this may be a slow process.

    Wooden Fixie Bars

I think it's kinda cool - I'd like to make my own bars, it'd feel like I'd achieved something interesting / bespoke. On the other hand, if they become the next fashion must-have for the fixie crowd then they suddenly become lame.
  19. Yes. Although you may need some more chainring bolts to hold the middle ring on the cranks - the ones you've got will probably be too long if you're not running a bash. Some people say that the chain stays on better if it's a 'proper' single ring design. I.e. it doesn't have shifting ramps etc to encourage the chain to fall off. I don't know how much of an issue this is, but I bought a new (single speed) chainring for my setup. (It looks nicer, too). I've got the e13 XCX device, no complaints so far - it looks well made and I've not lost a chain. The only thing I would say is that you can't run a bashring with it. If you think you might need a bash then it might be worth looking at devices that have a 'taco' plate built in.
  20. Yeah, I caught them in the act doing that - I heard the letterbox, found the card and went outside to find postie walking off. He didn't have the parcel on him. I reckon they just leave vaguely heavy items at the sorting office so they don't have to carry them round all day (this guy was on foot).
  21. Yeah, I had a 6n polo and it was sweet, sold it for peanuts despite it being a pretty reliable daily Nice and low go-kart feel to it, plus it had no grip at all and could understeer / oversteer all over the place, which was fun. I understand the 1.4 16v is the one to go for, although none of them are particularly rapid.
  22. Is that recovery truck really hoisting the van via the window frames? If they weren't ruined before, I'm sure they are now. I guess it's pretty lucky you didn't end up in water. That would have been bad.
  23. How many people of a certain demographic does it take to change a light bulb? A finite number. One to screw in the lightbulb and the rest to act in a manner stereotypical of the group in question.
  24. Well tidy, that. I love those RS clios, they look brilliant fun, probably the only French car I'd like to own.
