  1. i'm not a car person at all, anyone explain the 2 gear sticks?
  2. on my 24" i use 16-12, it's fine for static moves and seems sharp enough to build up some good speed. on a 26" you'd want 13t as it's almost the same ratio as 18-15 which is the popular 16" ratio, and 16-12 is close to 18-14 if you like it harder tl dr: 26" wheels: 16:13 (or 12t if you want harder) 24" wheels: 16:12t only...

    The Gym

i married the gym the last few years, my thoughts on the matter, deadlifts and squats make me a happy trials rider, since you go through jumping motions/movements, but with resistance, so you're launch can become more powerful.... Better arms come from decent tricep work, don't neglect you're triceps! they will push your biceps out more... work pull ups, dips and ab workouts into your routine EVERY DAY i always start with pull ups, dips and leg raises, warms you up nicely and over time you'll find yourself doing more of them, this was you get regular feedback on if you're improving, find someone who is doing better than you are to advice and motivate you, don't gym with clueless idiots who will waste your time... do record what you do, i introduced a notebook into my gym sessions and it made it harder to skimp on a workout cause i could see what i did last week and i'd always be working to beat myself each week, one more rep or a bit more weight... do you're own research too, consider your goals, do you wanna be stronger or just look good? there's different approaches to achieving different things so be careful with what you do read...
  4. as a new rider you'll only appreciate a "good" bike so much, it takes a long time to really appreciate and understand why you want certain features, that doesn't mean you should settle for something shit, but theres no point buying something totally excessive even if it is sort of a freebie. A local lad i know received a tasty insurance pay out and decided he'd get into trials, he was about to order an echo SL full build before he even got talking to us, i convinced him to buy the lite full build instead and he progressed very quickly as he had no fear in the bike being unsuitable, but the SL, or a koxx or anything like that, which offers a marginal weight saving is far to delicate to be worthwhile when your still progressing. You're guna smash your new bike into everything for the first year or two, and you're guna do it badly to, with experience you can bail out of moves with no damage to you or your bike, but when i learnt i frequently smacked my bike around, and then the stronger hardware can really be worth the extra weight. I'd advise an echo lite, and a pair of stronger forks being ordered simultaneously, with potential consideration to a different back brake (bb7 or hope, or maggy...) as i i found the echo discs weren't up to my personal expectations, consider that you're main new bike, as mods are easiest to learn on and the tiny wheels are indestructible. if you want a 2nd bike it makes sense to choose something very different to give you variety but it's likely you'll stick to riding pure trials and focus heavily on learning the techniques and riding to a good solid standard for a fair amount of time before you start picking up tricks and integrating a streety style so you could benefit from two different size TGS machines, unles you know you want tricks and you've got a background of using a streety rig... it's always a bit personal and how you ride and do things is unique to you, but i'd advise at the start to stick to learning the core riding stuff on stronger machines that make the job easy, street bikes and competition builds don't make sense for a novice, in my opinion...
  5. nio option for 0 bristol rides
  6. broken bones are wank

  7. or a camelbak bottle... regardless of how cheap and generic a product is, it should still be fit for purpose. in my eyes a sports bottle should only let water out when you want it to, his isn't and he's rightfully disappointed...
  8. one 14 post thread to long to skim over? he's cracked his stem clamp.. with stems and bars i always prefer to buy new as if they fail it's your face that takes it... no thanks, risk 2nd hand if you fancy your chances i guess
  9. best off buying a new stem as clamps are all a bit different... and if the clamp is cracked the rest could be damaged to, and a snapped stem can be very painful...
  10. i still can't manual after 6 years riding... don't let them yomp up your time. balancing static is different to a manual somehow. try learning to roll up and down things too, aim to roll up something about 1ft in height, front wheel on, front brake on, lean over, roll up... have you found trashzen? super useful... and do start pushing to learn pedal hops, the sooner you start the sooner you'll get em sussed, and since all static moves are a variation of the pedal hop, it hekps to get your head around it...
  11. bike weight is relative to rider and style, if you're a smooth and delicate rider with a fair chunk of experience having delicate light stuff is not a problem, if you're in the 'basher' phase of riding forget about it... i'm lucky enough to have 2 bikes atm, i have a 24 that is made up with numerous strong parts to ensure it always works and can take the abuse as it's my weapon of choice for most rides, and i attribute my inability to do pure trials to my full ability down to the geo more than the weight... lightweight is handy if you ride for long periods of time, as you're competing with much less resistance, and don't get worn out as fast (handy in a comp where you wanna be riding at your best, nonstop...), but i don't see a massive corelation with weight and performance, think about the 06 deng builds, they weren't light by todays standards, but we rode them bloody well... anything under 10kg should be fine, or you're weak and should consider making a change to yourself and not your bike... my riding ability increased massively after i smashed the gym for 9 months... i could ride non stop and effortlessly move the same bike so much better... edit: wall of text... tldr: heavy bikes are fine, go gym do many squats and deadlifts and stop being a little bitch
  12. when you're doing back wheel hops, if you wanna get pedal kicks, try to let the back brake off, pedal a little, so the bike does a little roll, then lock up the brake again, correct your balance, and repeat... ultimatley the only thing you can do is practise and no amount of reading guides and advice online will help as much, it helps to film yourself and meet other, more experienced riders who can critique and advise based on what they see...
  13. you'll want some performance vee pads and a trials freewheel and it'll be fine, i started on a t bird with no difficulties... the main need is the freewheel and pads. the tensile 60 click is excellent value, and so are heatsink pads...
  14. if you want strong, light and reasonable priced pedals consider the superstar magnesiums, they're really robust for mag pedals...
  15. wouldn't a front vee help cut the weight down? i know you'd have to change a few parts but the sl forks concern me anyway =p
  16. as for the rest of the build, keep it british if you can, middleburns, hope hubs etc... not a necesity but it'll really make the build...
  17. or talk to hope and see if they hook you up?
  18. spraying it will counter any weight saving efforts, so raw that bad boy, drill the headtube, seat tube and maybe the wierd extra bit of tub that meets the toptube and stays... i presume it's this one:
  19. it's generally considered normal to ride bikes with a seat too =p i don't see why you'd be adversed to your daughter taking up any sport, regardless of risk, i only know 2 riders that have broken a bone through trials, and i'm one of them, i bet footie is more dangerous and you'd let her do that at a guess, not to undermine you as a parent, just saying y'know, i didn't mean happy in the sense of yay your child is broken btw either...
  20. i don't see why you'd be happy for a theoretical son to risk injury over your daughter, we're not any less likely to snap bones etc than girls... i'm trying to teavh my girlfriend some riding stuff, she likes the idea of it all but she's not interested in putting the hours in.
  21. if you consider all women, then cut that demographic down to the mid teens to mid 20 somethings, as this is the usual trials age group i know you get younger boys, but girls will probably have to start a bit later cause of their development compared to males, then cut out all the girly girls... the fat girls, and girls with an existing full time hobby and you're left with a pretty small number, and bear in mind of this small number of 'cool/dangerous/extreme sport orientated girl' demographic is likely to be influenced by their immediate peers for a way into such a sport, you need to hope that the small number of this type of girl will meet enough (or one very) decent (in the sense of riding AND personality) trials riders in order to make a girl rider. trials is so small that even though it practically is a sausage fest it doesn't really have the man-party stigma that alot of extreme sports do. i hope i havent infringed on what someone else said but thats my view on the matter of why theres no girls riding... plus i'm off my ass on pain killers and typing on a phone keyboard so sorry if my grammar is off or something, it's to much faf to edit
