Motor Vechile Help

right,i'll try to explain this problem as best as i can but im no mechanic so i might say stuff wrong lol.

i got my 2000 x-reg 1.8turbo diesel ford escort van 2 weeks ago,and from the start it took a few attempts to get the thing going.the engine turned over but it wouldnt fire untill the 4th or 5th attempt,but once i was running it would run sweet,no problems what so ever,even would start well even after leaving it for 4-5 hours ;untill this week.

as of monday the bloody thing does not start when i need it too for when i need to get to work,i have flatterned the batterry 3 times attempting to get it going.i've had a mechanic have a look for 4 afternoons this week and he's fitted or adjusted . . .

1.non return valve on the fuel line

2.new battery

3.new fuel filter

4.gow plugs

5.tightened fan belt to alternator

6.adjusted tick over

so were a bit stumped now,does anyone have any idea's what could be up?

incase anyone was wondering,i wait for the glowplug light to go out before i try to start,there is electricty going to the plugs and the thing has started in the afternoons untill today.

any tips,ideas or anything greatly appreciated,thanks for reading,steve.

They got injectors? Don't know much about diesels. Could be blocked if it does though

Yeah they still have injectors. It's spark plugs they don't have :)

Be careful trying it for too long. 25 seconds maximum. Then leave for a minute or two and try again. Any more than 25 seconds and the cat gathers the vapour of the diesel, which accumulates in the cat and destroys the platimum. Yeah it'll run, but it'll fail it's next MOT...

Has he checked the compression?

Is it good diesel?

i've turned it over for no more than 10seconds at a time,but after a few attempts a light grey mist appears out the exhaust,so i imagine i've knackered the cat now,doh >_<

i dont think he has actually,im going to leave a note for him for when he next has a look and i'll mention that.

it should be,i've filled up twice from morrisons and the mechanic say's theres no sign of red in the system (not that running red would change the preformance i dont think).

I really doubt this but an additive is put into diesel, to stop it gueing up when it's cold. If someones used dodgy diesel that hasn't had the additive it may have blocked your fuel line.

Apart from that, all I can think is what has been said, maybe your injectors need a clean out.

i have taken the connector of by the fuel pump and then manually pumped the fuel filter by hand and diesel trickled out of the hose,maybe it's got clogged up in the pump .thanks for the reply

Fuel pumps done the dirty on you? I mean the best person to be asking is obviously the mechanic, he can touch all in your tight holes. Good luck fella.

i'll mention the fuel pump to him and see what he says,i should imagine that is what he may look at when he returns to look again.thankyoy for the reply too

Alternatively from dodgy diesel, is cooking oil, and theres plenty of people using cooking oil in the engines. not really sure what it is. seems youve checked things like glow plugs, providing your getting a decent amount of fuel, and compressions good, the only thing it could be, which no ones mentioned, and no ones checked by the sound of it, is pump timing? has it recently had a cam belt change?

if the timings half a tooth out, itll be advanced/retarded (snigger, you know you want to) making starting when cold difficult as hell, it doesnt explain why its got worse this week, but its worth checking.

My mum actually had a similar problem with her little diesel clio last week. It terned out it was soot that had built up in her exhaust valve. She drives really economicaly all of the time (she constantly brags how she gets 60+ MPG :rolleyes: ) so gradually it built up and it started running really shitty.

Diesels like a bit of a pasting every now and again to keep them healthy, or the exhaust valves clog up. Might be worth a try taking it off and giving it a good clean?

You mean EGR valve, and thatll just cause poor running, low power, worse mpg etc?

If so, dont see that it would cause poor cold starting, but start ok when warm, also no reason for it to start 4th or 5th time(as with fuel and cylinder temperatures, will increase with the fuel pump, and the engine cranking over.

Check those injectors, even if they "look" ok, that doesn't mean anything. They need to be tested, or source some other ones from a breakers to test it (they'll be around £150-200 each new probably).

Other than that, fuel pressure regulator at the end of the fuel rail? Not letting the rail get up to full pressure (around 3,000 bar, that's 44,000 psi btw).

Check those glow plugs again too.

Wouldnt be that high , and it wouldnt have a fuel rail, as its not common rail, hence the reason its got pump timing.

in one word,excellant!once warn the engine turns once then fires,and it doesnt stutter or change revs on its on,it ticks over lovely and runs lovely.

What's the weather been like on the mornings it doesnt start? Frosty?

it's been frosty a couple of days ,and been close to freezing a few nights.being diesel it doesnt like the cold too much,but even my dads citreon van starts well in the cold,and it french!
