Options?

Ok seen as there are alot of older people on here who have experienced this sort of thing I thought I should of asked you this. I am in year 9 and I am coming up to selecting my options within the next 2-3 weeks. I don't know what I should go for. Ideally I would like to have my own business just like Tartybikes which specialises in trials parts specifically. But I don't know what options I should be taking. I know business is the most obvious but if the business plan falls through I would like something to be backed up on. Any ideas?

What subjects are available at your school?

If you're looking to run your own business you need to have a back up plan (I can't remember the statistics, but a fair amount of businesses fail in the first 2 years). Rather than concentrating on a business now, why not concentrate on university? Doing a course that would help your situation AND something to fall back on if your business doesn't work out.

I would like to have my own business just like Tartybikes which specialises in trials parts specifically.

Don't do anything based on this at all... its a plain stupid idea.

- The trials market is already saturated, particually by tarty, but theres also Selectbikes and T-UK. So your wayy too late on the bandwagon there! There just no room, tarty are a very competant business and I can't see that changing anytime soon, while they are on the ball and progressing constantly alongside a neat team of riders. Ask yourself what could you do different;y to tarty that would make you better? It you can think of anything substantial then i would be impressed, rember being cheaper isn't being better. So drop that idea for a start its a total no-goer.

- Don't base you future arround bikes just because its "what i love and am going to do forever" thousands of riders say that but it will get old, just because you think you know everything about the trials market doesn't mean you can start a sucessfull business within the area! If you like the thought of running your own business and be entrepenurial then sure so business studies! But don't under-estimate it, it is a bloody hard subject to do well in (think its kinda easy at GCSE but well hard at GCE level)

- Look to the future and do what you think you will enjoy and be sucessfull in. i.e. i took economics as i thought that it would really aid me in the future and give me the potential to work for a global corperation and earn good money. I took P.E becuase I enjoyed it, and Geography because its an achademic subject.

Its all about making grown up decisions that will change your life, don't be so naive in thinking you will be able to becombe the top trials store in the UK, because realistically I only see Tarty going down when trials does, even they are diversifying with the K-124 project to expand there potential revenue ability! Because trials accounts for 0.001% of the bicycle market which just isn't enough to earn the big bucks from.

If you're looking to run your own business you need to have a back up plan (I can't remember the statistics, but a fair amount of businesses fail in the first 2 years).

Over 70%!

Practically everything as it is an academy. Don't know if you heard of it but it was rated within the top 3 non-private schools to go to :P

Simps: I don't think I would start the business as soon as I left school because I would just be a little fish in a big pond. I would probably start with something simple such as plumbing and then when I have a substabtial amount of money then do the business as well as a part time job. Maybe I could specialise in Trials such as tarty but also have mountain biking and a few other sports if the idea was still with me.

Your planning on spending years learning a proffessional trade and then think, oh im a big fish and becombe an enterpenur? :S you seem confussed as to what you want to do. Does your school do coure's such as plumming or can you go to a "special college" if thats what you really want to do (I know arround here after year 9 you can go to prospects college to learn a trade) instead of doing achademic subjects.

For now i would advise taking as achademic subjects as you can, because it sets you in better sted. to do anything you want at a later date.

EDIT: speak to a connections adviser and your parents. SORTED

Well I did double science and applied business at GCSE and then went on to do media production, graphics photography and Film studies at college.

The way I see it is that unless you want to go into a specific field that will require you to have a certain GCSE just choose what you think you'll enjoy the most because as long as you get 5 GCSE's including maths and english at C grade or above your pretty much onto any AS level course you want to do.

Not that you'll know what you deffinatly want to do after you finish school because you'll more than likely change your mind, but look in college prospectus's, Say you deffinatly want to do business, look up AS business at your local colleges and see what grades they want you to get.

I thought I wanted to go into the bike trade in year 9 but after working in a bike shop its the last thing I want to do. I took Geography, Resistant materials, Electronics and Drama (lighting and set design). I chose these because they are things I enjoy and the 2 technology subjects relate slightly to engineering. When I decided going into the bike trade wasn't for me I decided I wanted to be an engineer, and didn't want to carry on in further education, this was about half way through year 10. At that point I started researching apprenticeships in engineering and about 4 months ago I came across a practical engineering roll at Rolls Royce. It was just what I was looking for and I went to the opening evening then appied soon after. I got invited to an assement day and I got the job. What I'm trying to say is that you cant decide what you want to do specificaly in year 9 so take choices relavent to the area of work you want to be in. Then in year 11 you can talk to your careers adviser and research what you think you want to do and take it from there. Dont decide now. Hope I've helped. Tom (Y)

Very helpful matey (Y) I think I would go into the Engineer/Mechanics trade but all this could change. I have also changed my mind already about starting a business in the biking industry. If an offer comes up then sure I'll go for it ! Thanks to everyone for all your help :D(Y)

It's quite probable that your choices of career, well, your wants, will change over the next few years. Who knows what you will end up doing. The chances of you ending up in a career you think you will, is small.

I took Art and music. Art i ended up taking to A level, and music stopped at GCSE. Even with A level art, it was useless as a subject. It was useful though as another qualification to prove you can apply yourself...

If i could go back, i would take business for sure. You definately don't need to have a job in business to find it useful. I wish i had more knowledge.

This is one of the few chances in your eduation where you really do get a massive choice for your future, so don't take the easy route and do what you think will be easy. Do what will help your future. If you really are struggling though, then yeah, go for whatever you think you will get good grades in. A good grade in knitting is better than a crap grade in science for example. So what it's knitting. But that doesn't matter. You have proed you can learn, and apply yourself to a subject.

Good luck mate. Like i say, i'd do business and a computery thing...

LOL

do you not know that there is a reccesion going on , it will last for a long time. tihnk about this logically ok, oh no the water pipe leading to my tap has broken what do i do ? i know i could fix it myself £10 and become soaking wet or i could pay a plumber like £50. i know what i would people arent going to employ a great deal of specialist workers when they could fix it them selves for a fraction of the price, on the other hand you could be lucky enough to come out of school and the recession has gone.

i was going to take a plumbing course / become an aprentice to plumbing but i chose not to because of these reasons;

-it gives you very BAD knees a freind of mine who's dad works for pimlico(?) complains of bad knees alot of the time, also if you want to continue trials riding bad knees arent the way to do it.

-the reccesion i already have ranted on about it.

the sunject i took are;

-food (probably the best subject to take absouloutely love it).

-history (a lot of hard work).

-restistant materials (good fun but the teacher is an absoloute P***K).

-IT (good fun but sort of challenging it can be quite scary because on our course if you dont pass one AO (ASSESENT OBJECTIVE) you would fail the whole course (4 GCSE'S DOWN THE DRAIN) but there is some fun aspects of the coruse i like (creating your own web page))

I did art and media, I pissed around in both and got a pair of E's.

Have my GCSE results changed anything in my adult life? No! Just lie and say you got all A-C's* it's easy, nobody has ever checked, ever (including college)!

*Don't lie, and try very hard at school. :shifty:
