New Car Time

Recommended Posts

Right, in september I will start doing quite a few motorway miles. As a result of that (and also it being crap :- ) the escorts gotta go for something newer, nicer, more reliable and more economical.

Heres the stuff I need/want

Nice car for one

At least a 1.6 petty or a TDI would be nice, but not a ford TDI (and cant afford a TDCI)

Alloys

Bit of funness inside, Air con etc would be nice, ford Ghias come with leather....

Must like motorway miles. Ie. cant be drinking the juice while doing 70/80mph

I was looking at a Focus Ghia. Very nice cars to look at, drive, well built and have alot for your money. Wanted a diesel really but have been advised that the older TDIs are poo and the newer TDCI, whist AMAZING are outta my price range at the mo. So I was advised the next best thing in focus form is the 1.6. Any coments on this???

What cars can peole comment on?

My price range is between about 4 and 5k.

Bear in mind this is big investment for me

Thanks

Pug 307's are awesome cars. I recently rented one while in england. It's an extremely comfortable car and really does soak up motorway miles.

I done around 400 miles and it cost less than £30 to fill it back up.

You should look at the rover 25, as they hae just gone down the pan you can pick up an almost new one with all the mod-con's for relatively small money :-

Skoda Fabia's are meant to be a good car...

I'm driving a 1.8L ford mondeo, and although very comfortable to drive, it does drink alot of fuel, I think it's around 32ish Mpg, with general mix of driving types. I'm going to cornwal on monday, so will work out actual Mpg then :D

Yay! I just got one of those, they are very nice. Get the HDi with 110bhp, its very nice (the one i got) check out car giant for some good ex company cars, which go for a bit cheaper too.

I have a pic of mine in my gallery, if you would like something to tempt you in that direction... in fact here it is: :-"

Yeah the only reason I want leather etc is cos, well I want it lol. If im gonna be driving it everyday for AT LEAST 2 hours, i might aswell make it comfortable as possible!

And anal, I want something that I WANT!!! lol Dont want an estate either :-

Which HDI 307 is it with 110bhp? What size engine?

So what do poeple think then? Petrol 1.6ish? Turbo diesel 1.8/9ish??? Defo dont want a standard diesel cos theyre slooooooooooooooooooooooooow

2.0l Turbo diesel. Motorway overtaking is better than 80% of everything else on the motorway, possibly more. Can also be remapped to 136bhp if you feel that way inlined, and will still return you 55 mpg. you can buy a 136bhp version, but it is quite difficult to come by, and is exactly the same as the 110bhp version, but with a remapped turbo.

A new diesel is definately the best for motorway cruising, because you have so much torque.

There was a white one on car giant 90,000 miles (equivilent to 55,000 on a petrol) 17 alloys, leather, cd changer, for about 5.5 k

A 1.4 focus would be super gutless.....

1.6 petrol is bad enough.

How does it produce more power without requiring more fuel? And don't forget, if you remap to 136bhp its probably because you're going to blast about in it.

55mpg is the optimum fuel consumption - if you spend all day burning up high streets in 2nd gear then slamming the brakes on at the lights (even though you could see they were red from half a mile away) like half the idiots round here do then you won't get 55mpg.

No, i mean it doesnt lower the optimum mpg, because its a software change not a physical engine change. even when you do thrash them though you still get 45-50 mpg...

Try driving a 1.0 letre japanese car which does like 70mpg and tell me not to drive in 2nd gear :D I'd never get anywhere otherwise. 3rd gear is just... nothing! I still get a 0-60 time of about 30 seconds... :- Though i don't do the slamming my breaks on thing...

Lol

Tarty, the 1.4 focus was the same as the 1.4 escort........shite lol.

Nobody really bought them due to their pooeyness.

5.5K is a bit too much really for me, as I am gonna be bummed 1.5k on insurance aswel.........

Just been for a drive then and the 307 is an ugly car lol. Well compared to a focus anyways lol.

My wife has a 307 HDi 110. Really nice to drive, but the amount of little things that have gone wrong on it mean that as soon the the warrenty is up, it will probably be replaced. The interiors have really cheap plastic and it does feel quality. Oh, and the fuel economy has not been that great over the last few year on it - getting only 450miles to a 60 litre tank.

I myself have an Astra Coupe Turbo. All the Mk4 Astras are really nice to drive, even the diesels. If you can stretch to it, an Mk4 Astra 2.0 CDTi would be perfect for you.

Huh!? I agree it feels quality, but it seems like youre contradicting yourself there... our 02 plate pug seems pretty good quality inside, and all the plastics feel very nice and solid. We havent had anything wrong with ours, hopefully yours was just a dud :-

1.8 focus estate-petrol zetec

getting around 400miles to the tank. Around £42 every full fill up.

Paided £5000 for it with 48000 on the clock

It has air con, heated front windscreen, fogs, power stearing, air bags both sides and alloys!

Amazing size, the boot space is bob on.

Love it on the motorway, so smooth but its more fun on twisty country roads than the like of the mondeos etc.

If you need more info on focus's in general look at www.ffoc.co.uk and look on the forum!

Or you can add me to msn!

Sorry - I missed an n't off my last post. I meant to say, the 307 interior doesn't feel quality. There are so many different types of plastic in there, and cheap ones at that. Some of them are really hard to keep looking clean. Compare to a bottom of the range Mk4 Astra and there is a massive difference. Cheap interior materials are a trait of french cars in general though.

You can take the 307 apart with no tools - not good if you have kids in it! Next time you are in one, grab the cup holder and pull up. The whole lot comes straight out!

Yeah, I know what you mean about hard to keep clean, the bobbly bits get grimw stuck all around them! but when it is clean,, it looks nice. My car has the dark blue and black interior, so it may be different to yours. the fully black interior looks a bit more tacky. The cup holder and everything comes out so you can clean them easily! I dont have young-uns, so it seemed like a good idea to me, especially as the car was filthy when i got it.

BMW Z4 next! (N) In three years though (N)

I have a 206 1.9 LX, aircon, leccy windows, 65,000, excellent condition, £3700ono
