ok well when i passs my test i will look to be purchasing a van. all i really want is something i can stick a fold up bench seat in the back and enough room for a few bikes. the main vans ben looking at are:

ford escort 1.9TD

fiat scudo 2.0 JTD SX

fiat fiorino 1.7TD

citroen berlingo 1.9D

now which out of all these vans is going to be most fuel economic, dont really want a slug of a car and i know there all diesels so not gunna be ammasingly quick, s which van should i look more into? any more suggestions.

cheers

First off, congrats on buying a van and not a race-mobil that a lot of people buy and end up quitting trilas as a result.

Second, I doen't believe I'm saying this, I'd go with the ford.

It's reliable (for a ford) and cheap parts.

Usually I'd tell for where to go but since the other options are french and italian, i'd stick with the ford

sorry to disagree on this, but escort vans, in my opinion, are the worst vans ever, and jst to be picky, there 1.8's, not 1.9's aint they.

berlingos are the only other vans in that list ive had experience with, an are better than escorts. but mk4 astra vans are brilliant in 1.7 cdti form.

but if you could stretch to it, transit connect, side loading door, 1.8 common rail turbo diesel engine(aka mk1 focus diesel engine) higher roof line(could stand bikes upright in them, wheels in), are faster than the escorts, as economical, handle better, and dont feel to vannish.

also escorts are prone to rot, and connects hold there value a lot better.

if your gunna get a van, make it a connect or a mk4 astra

yea vitos and sprinters are amazing vans, and good value for money, just a lil too big for what he wants i fear, and there not to cheap on the insurance front either.

but if ur gunna get a big van, along with the mercs, check out the 2000+ transits(ones from bt are low mileage full servce history etc - shameless plug i know), an the vw transporters.

or, why get a van, why not get a nice discovery tdi, are semi common in van form, cheap as chips, reliable, fun off road, capable off road, loadsa room, an being a car(Well 4x4) derived van, seats are readily available from scrappy an seat belt mounting points will come pre fitted

what about VW caddy/Skoda Box Van/Seat Inca basically all the same van, 1.9 SDi lump. we have customers with them and they say theyre the best van theyve ever had. the SDi lump isnt as slow as people make out either.

weve got a freelander van and a disco van, and the insides of them are completely different to the non commercial version. theres no rear anchor points and the floor is just flat with eyelets for strapping stuff down.

id say the escort and i must say i have owned one (1.8 mk5 not a van) and i had no problems with it at all. so i would say go with the escort if you want some thing on the cheap. Bill a old member on here (yes he is still around and riding for those of you who used to speak to him) used to drive a transit around untill it got nicked. Escort vans have a bit of poke aswell.

Id suggest the scudo(Y) my dads company ran these back when he was the boss and they were great vans. fairly fast aswell actually (Y) and really reliable etc.

(Y) Yeah get a Fiat Scudo, i've got one at the moment.

There a good van plenty of room, i can fit 3 motorbikes in easy.
