This is against the rules, sorry.

AS levels are new (ish) and you have to do AS levels for one year, then A-levels for the next year. It just means that the exams are split so you can do half your exams in the first year at sixth form, then half in the second year. Some people do more AS levels than A levels though - quiet a few people do 4 AS-levels and then drop 1 and do 3 A-levels.

Yep! Can't f**king wait! Yeah, my course this year (Physiology) was structured very similarly to Manchester's Neuroscience course. The exams were the same structure, and many of the course units overlapped (I could have basically done the neuroscience units had I wished). I didn't like the course very much, mostly for the reason you said. It was VERY focussed (last year I learnt more about ion channels than anyone would care to know), and the exams only required revising two subjects per module (I did 6 modules) as there was a choice of two questions from five. So I had to basically accumulate lots of facts on a very narrow subject, that would be regurgitated and then forgotten again. One module in particular was a total joke - I had lots of exams in the days before it so I had done no revision until the night before. Then I revised the two subjects I hated least (which predictably came up in the exam), and scrawled an answer. By the end of the day I had forgotten most of what I had learnt. Seemed like a rather pointless (and hellish) way to spend 24 hours Medicine, on the other hand, I find very interesting. It's very broad so there's lots to learn, and it's flexible to a large degree so you can learn what you want. It's (obviously) very vocational, and you can easily see how your accumulation of knowledge is very useful in real-world situations, potentially for saving lives. Like I said, I can't wait to get back to that. I would love to do something like maths or philosophy at university, looks very interesting and a totally different way of learning. I have a friend who is doing a maths PhD and his workload at the moment simply involves 'thinking' for 4 hours a day (any more is pointless, apparently). Alas, we can't just spend all our lives at university (actually I want a proper job anyway - I'm tired of being skint).

I get my final BSc grade on Friday. Eek.

What Would You Use If Someone Broke Into Your House
Tomm replied to Barbara Logan-Price's topic in Chit Chat
My wit. -
That was actually intentional so I could copy the fact from my signature and then edit the post. You were just too quick

Octopuses Octopodes often escape even from supposedly secure tanks, due to their intelligence, problem solving skills, mobility and lack of rigid structure. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5cs-hPLq-E I didn't realise quite how freaky they were. Here's one eating a shark http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k70KIy9uILI&NR=1

I don't think that actually moves any files though, it just redirects the shortcut. So you'd have to manually move all the files from the 'old' my docs folder (wherever windows keeps that) to the new one.

It might have been helpful to mention that in the first post then eh?

This is my Zebdi, date on the photo is 2003. I had a DMR sidekick before that which I regarded as my first trials bike, but I don't have pictures of that

It's probably a virus trying to run some code and failing... I think?

And in that other thread, you didn't notice that someone had posted the exact same facts a page earlier

I am well paranoid about dropping my phone/ipod down the toilet. I've never done it so far (touch wood) but I have dropped my glasses down there and had to retrieve them

My Grandad had one of them when he had cancer. You could hear the poo falling into the bag

Surely that's just traction control which has been around for years (and is on the Enzo)?

I don't know anything about T-shirt printing, but I imagine that you can have a design on the front which is, say, 25cm x 25cm. Anything bigger is going to be more expense. Your design could potentially cost three times as much with the logo up the side, on the front and at the bottom. The bit up the side looks good (if it is feasible) but lose the other bits

Do that. Alternatively your computer will probably run around twice as fast if you free up a gigabyte of space on c: (by moving stuff to d:, for example).

I don't really get why people say things like that, as if it proves some point? The use of cannabis in those conditions is controversial at best but that's not the point either. I'm assuming that you don't have any of those conditions, so surely what you're saying is irrelevant? By way of an example - You can use the product from the bark of a certain tree to treat cancer. So it's "natural" (like cannabis) and it's very effective in treating certain conditions. Would I eat it for fun? No! It's very toxic and dangerous. Not everything that's "natural" is good for you... Likewise ancient peoples have used anything they can find as a 'remedy'. Burning, draining blood etc. But we now know that these treatments at best do no good, at worst are very harmful. Obviously you're entitled to your opinion on this. But in my opinion, the only sensible choice is to look at the medical evidence. The stats don't lie! Unless of course you actually believe there's some kind of government conspiracy to demonise cannabis, in which case you might want to ask where that paranoia has come from, and if you should cut down on the spliffs Er yeah. See above point I think. Don't be thinking that I'm against smoking cannabis or whatever. I really don't care in the slightest whether other people smoke it. But don't bullshit as if cannabis is the best thing since sliced bread, and completely risk-free.

Yeah that's exactly what I thought when I saw that design, and Monkey Boys.

Looks alright but that font is gash, and if you change the font it's basically the same as some of the other ones from other people.

You could say the same about heroin though - most of the long term problems of it are not a result of the drug itself, but poor sanitary conditions that junkies use to inject - shared needles and water from the shitter etc. They wouldn't happen without the drug though, and it's the same with ecstasy. Those deaths wouldn't have happened without the drug. Obviously the risks (for ecstasy) are blown massively out of proportion though.
-
The only thing is with harder drugs like ecstasy and stuff like LSD and mushrooms is that they change your thought patterns in a way that alcohol simply can't. There's a lot of potential for them changing the way you look at things and that scares me. I had a good friend who had a really bad trip on mushrooms and it was horrible, really freaked him out and he was acting really weird (He was convinced that he couldn't remember people's faces any more and he'd have to live the rest of his life not recognising or remembering people). The brain is very finely balanced in a state of equilibrium and I'm not very sure it's a good idea to upset the balance every Friday night.

OK, it was done by adding up the opinions of about 30 consultant psychiatrists specialising in addiction. 9 categories, : Physical harm split into 3 subcategories (Acute, Chronic, Intravenous harm), Dependence (Intensity of pleasure, Psychological dependence, Physical dependence), Social harms (Intoxication, Other social harms, Health-care costs). Each drug was scored (from 0 to 4) within each subcategory, and all the scores added up and averaged. So yeah, it's fairly arbitrary and it's only the opinion of the authors who are mostly professors of psychiatry. Take that as you will - I doubt they've ever tried heroin or ecstasy but on the other hand they see the effects of misuse on a day-to-day basis. Note it doesn't really talk about the benefits of the drugs anyway - only the harm. The paper basically says that the current system of class A/B/C is way too vague and inaccurate, and this is an attempt to create a more realistic classification system. So I guess you can use this to weigh up the risks against your own perceived benefit, and that's up to you because no two people are alike.

I like my Avid Juicy. The power of a BB7 with a nice lever feel, and loads cheaper than the Hope. It took aaaages to bed in properly though - so you'll find older posts by me that say it's not that great. But it is, now It's still twice the price (more or less) of a BB7 though, whether it's worth that is up to you.

It was from the Lancet which is pretty much the most reputable medical journal there is. Obviously if you really wanted to get to the bottom of it, you could read the original article and it would say how they've come about this 'harm rating' but I really can't be arsed. I don't see any real reason to suggest that it's not accurate? There's no crystal meff on there though.
