I've built my own CNC router. You definitely want to head over to the www.mycncuk.com forums. Nearly everyone is using Mach3 for the control (along with something like a Smoothstepper motion control card) - that's the setup I use anyway. It's certainly a fun project but can get expensive and very time consuming! Make sure you are realistic about your requirements right from the start. I wanted something to do a bit of everything but what I've really realised is I want something for almost exclusively cutting aluminium. I would of designed things differently from the start if I'd of known!
  2. Picking up my father in-laws 1999 Bandit 1200 tomorrow! He's owned it from new but it hasn't been used since about 2010. Less than 9000 miles on the clock! I feel like I'm getting my motorbike bug back again. I'll need some new leathers... any recommendations on a budget 2-piece suit?
  3. Hi all, Looking for new car suggestions if I may. My LC has been a blast but it's getting quite tired now. I don't want to spend more than £4k ideally. I am wondering if to go for a diesel as I'm doing 350 miles/week. I think it needs to be a 5 door and I'd still like it to be nippy but may have to compromise this for fuel economy. 35+ mpg ideally.
  4. Runs Android 6.0, I think that's marshmallow? Got mine on best offer for £150. Quick delivery from Germany by UPS. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/112378645691
  5. Cheap android head unit for the win...
  6. LC 1.8T K04 064 turbo conversion....Yay or nay? Rediculous for a daily?
  7. Hi guys, A quick, and perhaps dumb, question!... The engine in my LC is starting to rack up the miles now (150k). There's nothing wrong with it (touch wood) and the cars going well. If I wanted to keep the car for several more years, would it be worthwhile rebuilding the engine? Can a 'basic' rebuild be achieved at home with an engine crane or is it much more of a specialist job? Will cylinders require re-honing etc to do a proper job or could you replace piston rings etc without? Cheers, Dave
  8. Car choice question (for high mileage) There is a possibility I might be taking a new job which would entail 102 miles of driving a day (motorways). I would be looking to keep costs down as much as possible but would also want something comfortable and not lacking too much in power. I think cruise control would be very useful and I would prefer 4 doors. Current thoughts are a VAG 1.9TDI of some description?
  9. All sorted (touch wood), cheers for the help!. It was actually quite straightforward with dropping the subframe. Didn't have one of the banjo bolt copper washers so re-used the old one. Hopefully it will hold until I get round to replacing it.
  10. Cheers guys! Went to pull off the drive for work and fluid everywhere! Just picked up a steering rack and phoned in sick ...it's going to be one of those days!
  11. Emergency! - Calling all 1.8T owners The steering rack on my LC is leaking from one side badly. Is it best to drop the subframe to remove the rack or do it in place? Got to get this done today so I don't waste another day off work. Cheers, Dave
  12. Anyone driven/own an Octavia vrs mk2? I think it's between that or a cupra R to replace my LC once it's reached its end of life.
  13. Attended a speed awareness course today... actually wasn't too bad but 4 hours was a long time! On a side note, what are people's opinions on the Octavia vrs mk2? May be my next choice once the LC gives up.
  14. Do a search for "Control Cable". CY cable would probably do the job. Good prices here: http://www.csecables.com/acatalog/Flexible-Control-Cable.html
  15. I'm currently building my own CNC router...
  16. I feel like I should post in here too... Not ridden a trials bike in a very long time now but visiting this forum is something I've grown up with and have so many emotional attachments to. Trials has had a massive impact on my life; my health, the music I listen to, work, friends I've made and sadly the friends I've lost. I have a large collection of old trials vids on a hardrive somewhere. Watching them is very nostalgic. I have to say, the difference in riding compared to nowadays is massive. I miss the days of Danny holroyd!
  17. Just a quick one...might go and look at this golf tomorrow. I know you can't tell from the advert if its any good but was wondering if the price looked about right? http://www.autotrader.co.uk/used-cars/volkswagen/golf/used-volkswagen-golf-1-9-tdi-match-5dr-telford-fpa-201512179526095?utm_source=Email_a_Friend&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=Email_a_friend_car
  18. It was bad enough on the roads, never mind the track, fair play. In other news. I've come full circle on my car search. Now thinking a 1.9tdi (105) either a Leon mk2 or golf (or a3?). I'm doing 17k miles a year and what my next car to last a minimum of 3-4 years. I know these engines are supposed to be pretty solid. What sort of mileage would people aim for if you were looking to buy?
  19. I think I've decided on which car to go with...Leon mk2 1.4 TSI (125). Seems to tick all the boxes. I'm not a big fan of the interior but could live with it. Anyone on here got one?
  20. If I were to go petrol (still undecided) then the Ibiza Mk4 1.2 TSI and 1.4 TSI models look good? 1.2 TSI with a remap sounds appealing.
  21. I can completely agree on the looks side of things. I really like the way my mk1 looks! Which engine do you have? I have been tempted by the mk1 FR 1.9 TDI (150bhp). Exactly the same as I have now, just with a diesel engine as far as I can see. I have seen some 56 reg ones with Cupra R bodykits as standard too... Only problem is finding a low mileage example.
  22. Mk2 Leon 2.0 TDI FR? Might be a stretch at my budget and not super economical?
  23. Thanks for the advice Mike. Having a scan through Autotrader (is Autotrader dead?) there don't seem to be many VAG cars that fit my criteria (perhaps I'm expecting too low a mileage for my money?). I was thinking along the lines of an A3 2.0T...
  24. I've just realised this. I have the money in the account. Hmm maybe a 0% credit card would be a better idea and do it that way. Just been looking atMazda's 3's and 6's..
  25. Trials forum (all 7 users) I need to call on your help, please. Long story short, my LC went in for a cambelt/water pump and the garage has found coolant leaking from the head gasket. The car has 130k and apart from that there are no other problems. I have come to the conclusion that I want to sell it and buy somethin economical. As much as I used to enjoy long nights in the freezing cold under the car, I just can't be doing with it anymore. I commute 360 miles a week and I want to see 45+ mpg (preferably more). Therefore I assume I'm looking at a diesel. I think I can stretch to £5k (never spent more than 2.5k on a car before). In order to soften the blow, I may prefer to buy from a garage which has 0% finance (never bought from a garage before). The only requirements I really have are fuel economy, must be 5 doors, doesn't need to be "fast" however needs to drive comfortably on motorways etc, must be a manual, needs to have a good track record for reliability. I'm hoping you guys can help. Today is not going well (I need a new roof on the house...). Cheers, Dave
