Hope Pro 4 SS Vs Pro 5

I'm looking at replacing my old Echo Sl Ti freewheel with a 135mm bolted freehub. I've been considering either a Hope Pro4 SS or a Pro 5, are there any real reliability or performance issues with either hub? I've seen that there were a few problems with both models when they were first released, but lots of people seem to use them with their Crewkerz frames, just not heard of any recent/long term issues.

i'd love an I9 or a Chris King, but one is too cost is the main reason for discounting these options.

You are right, there are problems with both hubs. Some riders even do not want to ride Hope anymore (e.g. Yohan Triboulat).
But I never encountered a problem with my Hope IV SS (I had 3 different hubs).

I saw quite a few used Hope Pro V recently to sell that came back from warranty.

Charlie Rolls seems happy with his two hubs.
Difficult to get a clear picture of the reliability.

Some I9 had also issues.

My current assumption is that the frame stiffness, how the wheel is laced and how powerful the rider is play a big role in the reliability

I know you're asking about Hope hubs, but if you're looking for a bolt-on 135, I've had great luck with TMS's freehub. It's only 72 poe, but it's 302g and it's been bulletproof for over 2 years now. Not sure how Brexit shipping is, but the hub is 169 euros. I've recently built up a new Ozonys 20" and needed a 12x135 so went with a Hope 5. So far so good.

I did see that Hope have released an update to the Pro 5 to resolve some of the issues. I guess all parts are going to have problems to a degree.

At least Hope's warranty is pretty good.

I'd not seen the TMS hub to be honest, it's light for a rear freehub that's for sure. Interesting, although not as being as a Hope 🤣

I'm running a hope pro 4 but my next choices are gonna be a spank hex hub and a i9 (if u remove the grease it seems to run nicely)

I also think a big factor is not only "how the wheel is laced and how powerful the rider" (La Bourne), but how often do you ride and the style of the rider.
I ride 5 time s a week so that's my only fear with the i9

I decided to go with the I9 because as per forum feedback I've seen, that seemed to be the only high engagement solution for trials that doesn't skip. Well, yes it skips too.. But it's very minor and happens most likely only when I'm turning, so when there is going to be some flex. I've never experienced any skipping when preloading a gap, that usually happened with the 135 freewheels (and ruined the move).

So far, it's incredible and the light weight makes it feel almost like a front freewheel setup, or not significantly far away from that.

Some say double spring mod would get rid of skipping but add some drag. I might try that at some point if the issue gets worse.
With the Clean 135 freewheel I already did the mod and it added hell a lot of drag/noise but nothing improved...

Well i went for a Pro5 in purple in the end, more engagement points, a warranty and being able to get a fancy colour swayed me. I'll update with how i get on with it. Bit of an upgrade on my 15 year old Echo Sl Ti freewheel.

How’s the pro5 (did you get an ss?) going? I’ve been enjoying riding again so much that it might be time to get a proper hub and step it up a little. Nicely coinciding with the death of my ultra cheap china special!

I’ve always had good results with hope and they are waaaaaaay cheaper than the i9s etc.

I've had absolutely no problems with it at all, it is the updated 4 pawl version (like the Pro 4). So that may be why I haven't experienced any skipping, that and I'm a wuss 😁

in my side, I stripped  2 Hope pro4 SS. Don't know much why I am so unlucky with those hubs. I am not a destructive rider but the hubs failed to me. I am on the state where trying on better alternatives without spending so much.

This is the endless story.  I didn't have luck either. I have had two Pro 4 ss and one Pro 5 ss and in all cases skips. In the other hand the warranty works very well (at least if you buy in Tarty). Now I am running a Spank Hex with no issues by the moment, any skips, no one. The built feel robust and the rachet and pawls engagement perfectly. However, one has to adapt to some play until the engagement point clicks, is less immediate than in the Hope hubs and both have very similar number of e.p. (102 Hex and 108 Pro V). I can not explain it better. Now, I am waiting for the I9 Hydra 2 single speed....
