Single Speed Kit

HI, all I have been wanting to convert my trials bike to single speed but i'm too tight to pay £20 for the DMR kit and individual spacers are nearly a pound a pop. Anyway this morning I was messing about with an old cassette and got it apart to find that cassettes contain spacers so anyway I will tell you how to convert your bike to single speed for nothing.

Guide

Parts Needed

2x cassettes

paint

Tools

Lock Ring tool

2.0mm allen key

Screwdriver

1. Remove the cassette from your freehub using the lock ring tool

2. Undo the three bolts with the 2.0mm allen key these may be rivetted in which case just pop the rivetts with the screwdriver by forcing it between the two cogs and turning it.

3.You should then end up with this:

4.It is the small plastic spacers which are needed you may have to repeat steps 1 and 2 with another cassette to get enough spacers.

5. You can now paint the edge of the spacers which you will see. to make it look better.

6. Now just assemble the spacers and the cog onto the freehub making dure that the rear sprocket is aligned with the front chain ring. Then tighten the lockring. You should now have a cool looking single speed set up like this:IPB Image

7. Now for your mech firstly remove your shifter and gear cable inner and outers. Then get the inner cable and trim it down so that from the metal bung onwards is just 3 inches then pull it through the cable clamp so that it lines the jockey wheel with the cassette cog.

Just thought i'd share this with you as it has helped me

it can kinda churn up the bit of the hub which the cassette fits onto

but heck i run it anyway

All cogs will eat into the shell. Just try a Surly splined or Chris King Kog which have wider bases to dissipate pressure.

Really good guide. I might go and do this to my old bike today so I can ride something while I'm waiting for my parts for my new bike. (Y)
