I’ve got the green hex with Maggie mounts and run Shimano SLX cranks and an OG 1999 threshold bashguard- had to do a little filing to get it to be perfect, but they are the greatest cranks I’ve ever run.. I think they were $110 usd new, I’ve never felt anything stiffer. My pogo has ffw isis cranks, they are noodles compared. ali c said some sram? Cheap cranks are awesome, a quick search here should show which ones he likes now. He bent his slx , but he’s doing 13 ft drops in demos on the regular.. I don’t exactly put that power down.

    Nutrition is key as you get older, extremely important to heal properly and actually ride well... back in my 20s I could eat total crap and feel great, also drank like a fish- get up the next day and ride for 6 hours eating candy bars and burritos. Drink like a fish that night and continue the same next day... I’m almost 36, if I get drunk now it takes me 2-3 days to feel ok again... lead me to stop drinking entirely. Getting older I realize riding bikes is a very important part of my existence and I’ll cut out anything/ spend time doing proper PT if it allows me to ride at a decent level as I age. I will say the new pogo stick bikes are so good that they make dangerous huge moves way too attainable... falling becomes a real worry for the first time, I’m in America where our health system is a joke. Have to dial it back to feel comfortable..

    I've had a bit of a cold for 4 days so writing a lot is easy right now... I did did want to talk about the imbalances caused by riding trials only for years and years... I’ve been riding 20? Years, left foot forward- sidehop left... hundreds of hours spent riding with left foot dominance... my left calf was significantly larger than my right calf before I began strength training.. I also made a strong effort to begin riding right foot forward, and track standing with everything opposite to what I had been doing for 20 years (wheel turned to the right, right foot forward). I feel more imbalances can come from other things- we see this in beginner riders all the time... wrist pain because of improper bar/lever angle etc etc... imagine if your front brake lever angle was 1mm off ideal- you wouldn’t notice it but riding for hundreds of hours with it incorrect may have an effect on some part of your body. Also using the same levers for brakes- rear brake gets a lot of use in trials, I’m sure my rear brake hand is stronger than my front brake hand... I’ve thought of going Moro/British style brakes Doing multiple sports definitely helps you not burn out on trials, you work extra muscles/parts of the brain that don’t get used during trials... just have to make sure you don’t overtrain. Any excercise is good excercise

    Fair warning: writing a rant about all aspects of trials and the body on my mind. All in all just do whatever you like, this is your life. I think most people here don’t have the resources (money, time, interest) to want to get an actual “coach”, from what I understand in France and Spain there are plenty of coaches mostly training the younger kids... Gilles/Giacomo have their dad, the French coach Serg... Jack Carthy has his, you can see in that one video released this year a bit of it.. a bit of what it takes to be the world champion, and it takes time, dedication and love. Most here will say just ride more, instead of spending that time in the gym... but you guys have poor weather which makes a gym more appealing. I think getting a basic strengthening platform is key to most humans- first learn how to properly walk, proper posture- proper basic mechanics... then start doing the big three lifts- squat, deadlift and bench press. Squat and deadlift are both compound entire body movements- want big biceps, they’ll get bigger with proper deadlift. Work the whole body and strengthen everything, not just one or two muscles. Now a coach comes in handy once you have a good foundation - you can take it to the next level of training, more specific to our sport... Olympic lifts, snatches, cleans, explosive lifts would be an idea...plyometrics is a word thrown around a lot... kettlebell training is what I’m currently obsessed about..it is the most explosive thing that’s natural to my body. I follow some jump specialists on instagram who coach American basketball/volleyball people- they study the approach and technique of the jump very closely... I think if one with proper knowledge of ( @Ali C Do you know someone who’s working towards becoming a physical therapist?) body mechanics could critique certain riders technique with super slow motion cameras we would have some insight into what motions could be used to strengthen the right muscles in the gym. Or “teach” the neurons to expect/perform better during riding... I think if someone can balance on a slack line and do handstands very well- they may be better at doing balance/nose related moves than someone who has never done a handstand. These basic human skills- natural movement / body awareness transfer very well towards bike trials... perhaps not in the very beginning- when you are still learning how to pivot/do basic moves, but once you have good bicycle control a strong/aware body makes a difference. Anyways.. I think just just finding other people to ride with on a routine basis will make you the best.

    That was massive, like 7 feet wide !! And 6 feet down. Essentially a 2 foot gap flat to flat with that pogo machine.... I wish it was ten minutes for that one gap, they need to learn how to milk that clickbait.
  9. Aye I used to have all 3 on the drive side, but someone said I would prematurely ruin the B.B. cup as there wouldn’t be enough thread contacting the frame... that’s how his whole thing started! A new longer B.B. cup like what was posted in here would be my next idea... unless all 3 are fine to work on the drive side, and this whole thread has no meaning and shouldn’t of been started Ive got free moving cranks, better than before- the teeth just stuck into the chain stay. Cheers for the help, I won’t know if it really works till I properly ride the bike... but yes it is CLOSE
  10. Seems to be in good order now thanks to you guys ! went to my lbs and got a 25mm spacer, same width as the 24mm shimano spacers. Worked a treat, hopefully nothing goes foul when I pedal kick- I’ve got ~1mm or so of clearance now... I will end up grinding a tiny bit off the teeth if such a thing happens, for future readers- just added the spacer on the drive side crank before I slipped it on like they suggested here. Fired up to get back on this bike... crashed hard January ‘16 and haven’t properly been able to ride since... slowly recovering with the help of a good pt. Life’s a b#### sometimes
  11. As someone who comes from when you were around, I had a level boss 1065, 1100 and a 1080?85? xtp... I have a second? First? Generation hex, green one with four bolts Maggie. If I put tons of spacers and a short stem on it like Ali c has in his new bike check video- front wheel spins, bunny hops, spins in general become very easy... pump The tires up high and have fun at the skatepark... or you can can put a longer /lower stem bar situation in then and be set for pure trials. Set for pure trials meaning not quite like a new modern hilarious cheater pogo stick (they aren’t worthy of “bicycle” status), but like a tiny bit higher B.B. koxx level boss.. rocks are very fun. I’m attempting to bridge a gap between these two- I want to be able to ride fast af on trails/the streets and enjoy some time on rocks as well with the same set up. Currently 80x40 with 5 ish mm spacers underneath, I had 70x30 with a TON of spacers underneath- it made it very very fun for bunnyhopping but gaps and taps suffered- was too far back. not it everyone can handle the POWER of the great 26” original wheels, clearly @aener needs to practice riding more... 20” wheels are for women and children, it’s written in Wikipedia....must be true

  15. Cheers... yeah I’ve had a black saddle on order forever and just came in... big fat one, could save major weight there but i like sitting. Both my bikes would be ideally all silver / black... but a green rim, blue hub, things i had no choice as they were a good deal/the only option at the time... that spark rim came from Germany, absolutely amazing wheel w pro4 hub.. arcade fork and through axle makes me not want to ride all my qr bikes. yesterdays sunset thrown in there... welcome to Southern California, every day in the winter.. inspired is overdue for a trip here.

Wow, three of my favorite riders writing in a row... thanks for the help guys!! @Ali C - fantastic idea why did i not think of such a thing @monkeyseemonkeydo Adding a spacer after the cup is already in... huntin in my spacers drawer now. @John Shrewsbury thanks... i slowly filed it down, would check clearance and put a chain on there - making sure it still fits. There is still a lot of thread inside each bolt so I’m hoping they stay strong, may use some blue loctite. @ben_travis awesome, thank you! Now if anyone can magically make the hashtag cranks go to 25% of its price my pogo will have its drivetrain issues corrected...”when i was a kid cranks cost $75!” will edit when I figure everything out and get it working !
  17. If you are unfamiliar with the slx it comes with 3 spacers to be used on the bottom bracket- two drive side and one non drive... I had been running all three on the drive side for a while when a friend said beware doing that- not good for the bottom bracket! When the cranks are run properly, 2 spacers drive and 1 non drive the chainring is just stuck into the bb yoke. I’ve been spending the last two days filing the four bolts that the chainring links to, still no good... need another mm at least if not 2. Afraid I’m going to fully ruin the crank if it goes another 2 mm away. @Ali C didn’t you run slx cranks on the hex?? What was the secret?? I’m light and a light rider, is 3 spacers on driveside going to lead to a premature failure?? Not enough thread in the frame? Would like to keep as they are the greatest cranks I’ve ever had. Do they sell driveside cups with extra long BB threads?? Ala hope?
  18. Taking a redo on my hex, that paint was BRUTAL. Paid someon $50 to strip it, wasn’t even a good job- had to take 000 steel wool and much time with an exacto knife to get al the little chips out of the welds... frame feels much lighter, doesn’t show it on the scale. Looking forward to riding it again!! whats up with the new model hex- different geo? 5mm longer wheelbase all I could see? All I could do last night after a long day.. today in our ever summer land: Another edit...I think I have to change from 22-17 to 20-15/16... what should I go for? Can’t get the chainring to clear from carving into frame without putting all 3 spacers on drive side w these slx cranks- which I fear will lead to a premature bb death...

  25. I've got the trp spyre (road version) on my touring bike and I would say they are the worst f**king brakes I've ever owned. Ok not as bad as Hayes early disc brakes the year 2000... but pretty close. The pads unwind themselves after 1 hour of riding, I haven't taken the time to remove the pads and put loctite on the screws to hope that stops it. With four fingers I cannot get the front brake to lock up into an endo, the road version is weaker than the mountain version? I have tried the Spyke model on my friends Alias for a ride around the parking lot. First impression is mushy shite. Just like hope mini back in the day- you squeeze it - it hits- the caliper expands 2-3 mm under the pressure... makes your lever feel mushy and you will pull it until the bar stops you. Not my idea of a good brake for trials. Avid bbdb / odyssey cable&housing/ single digit 7 lever / tt pads = ultimate brake land for mechanicals..
