Old People.....

This is the kinda thing that builds up and up in my mind.... mostly when im out driving and all unexpected and dangerous driving is done by old people but today an old woman took it to a totally new level! I was walking back from the shops and there was a old woman on a mobility scooter who came wizzing past me... i was like oh right ok then luvvy!!! so i crossed over the 1st part of the road, and she just went straight across the 2nd part of the road and got hit by a car (heck) afterwards i was like..... shiiiiiiiit, turned out she had cataraks in her eyes or something and could hardly see anything.... but turned out she was gravy her scooter was kinda f**ked and she had red coming out of her head... i called 999 and everything i was well proud......

I know loads of people shouldnt be driving on the roads..... i should know my mums got serious neck strain, after a 90 year old man didn't touch the brakes and drove straight into the back of my dads car and seriously hurt her.... so question is.... should old people be allowed out of the house? cant we just have a massive culling of them or something??? or just locked up together and given strong sedatives.... or maybe... have curfews... like only let them out towards certain hours.. so they can all just crash into each other

And ban then on going on holiday to all the awsome places and ruining the atmosphere? just ship them all off to somewhere like...... Antartica and just not tell them that your not doing return plane journeys....???

An old man drove straight into the back of me while I was stood at traffic lights. Obviously not my fault and the insurance paid for the fix, but it's never been quite the same since because it now rattles and I can't for the life of me find what it is.

So yeah, I agree. At least make them take their driving test again when they get to 60. I bet 90% of them would fail on dangerously bad hand eye co-ordination and reflexes.

Everyone should have to re-take their test at 60, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100 etc... Its rediculous, A lot of old people learned to drive when there were FAR FAR less cars on the roads when they had reactions and could actually see :/

As for mobility scooters etc, there should be some basic test/license... Trouble is without these a lot of the elderly simply wouldnt survive.

I have an old guy teaching me how to drive at the minute, he keeps making me brake so i can check the raods clear before going round a car parked at the side of the road.... which would be fine if he didn't want me to start braking about 200-250 yards away from said car in 20-30 zones.

In an almost complete contrast of character though he made me go round a 4 lane super roundabout and up a busy dual carriageway with some sketchy sliproads on my first lesson

I just think he's a bit weird to be fair... might have a look for someone a bit more normal to learn with.

EDIT: On a seperate note, i almost got hit by an old person in a car as i was walking along the main high street path. He panicked after a car came near him and he swerved onto the pavement to avoid the car, if i hadn't heard the tyre noise on the curb turn my head slightly and jump into someones garden he'd have plowed me over. Didn't even stop  stupid coffin dodger.

When you've passed your test and got a few thousand miles under your belt, you'll understand. Well I can relate to him anyway. It shits me up when i'm in the car with someone I don't really trust to be a safe driver, nevermind someone who can't drive full stop.

Anyway back on topic, theres an old guy at our local pub, he pulls in at about 7pm and by last orders he's on about 10 pints. He then spins his motorised scooter around and drives home on the roads on 2 frigging wheels, taking at least 5 people out between the bar and the door.

How is that ok?

i thought there was a retake? at like 60 when your license expires an you have to take another test or something

I think there is, but once you take and pass it at 60, you're free to drive until you feel unfit to drive any longer.

Meaning a 100 year old guy can drive just 'cos they passed their test at 60. 40 years is a long time to age, eye sight, reactions, observation etc?

Problem with old people is that they're way over cautious and they brake too early and when they don't need to - meaning you don't expect them to at all, so usually cause crashes like that. They're just annoying.

Yeah but i'm nearly the same age as you, sensible and have very good reaction times. On a quiet road at around 11.00am with good visibility and no sideroads or driveways for cars to come out of theres no need to begin braking 250 yards away, he makes me slow right down to about 10mph in the space of 50 yards or so and i have to crawl up to the car on the side of the road until he takes his foot off the brake as well, causing a lot of drivers behind me to get very annoyed. Its just weird that he does that after a good few lessons still, yet on the first one i was doing 70mph up a dual carriageway that leads to the motorway, taking sliproads and huge roundabouts as if i should know what i was doing.

old people suck at driving. most of them never even sat a test and they don't have to have a resit. my granda drives like a f**king loony and doesn't use fourth gear if were on a motorway he goes redlines third then shifts to 5th because he thinks he's saving fuel rather than going low revs through 3rd 4th and 5th

Its called eco driving, my instructor keeps banging on about it and i've done it a few times myself. I guess it depends on the car but the focus i'm driving doesn't get anywhere near redlining in 3rd at 28-30mph and it will quite happily switch to 5th.

Driving in a sensible gear for the road speed and conditions can save a lot of fuel too. In most cars 30MPH can be achieved in 3rd or 4th, at higher speed top gear can be very flexible and economical too. Try block changes, keeping your hand on the wheel for longer, modern cars can allow for 2nd to 4th, or 3rd to 5th for example, saving wear on the clutch, gearbox and saving fuel.

Two cases on the isle of wight.....

1 - Some old guy without a liscence was in an auto (used to a manual) and ploughed up a kerb from a parking space, across a pavement and down onto the beach, killing somebody, all that because he didn't hit the brake as soon as he realised he was going the wrong way.

2 - an old lady trying to park reversed 90 degrees up a kerb and into a shop window during lunch time traffic. Stoopid old people.

No some old people are legends, what if you become old would you like to be culled? Iknow loads of old people who can handle both modern and old cars sensisible, well 100 round a dual carrigeway round about is kinda sensible.....

If i was to be culled i would understand that i was a finantial drain on society and that if i died it would lead to regeneration and a fall in housing prices for those people who had a life left in front of them, not just taking an interest in polotics, living part time in hospital, playing scrabble, falling asleep half way though convosation, and enjoying gardening if it didnt make my back hurt... i think if as soon as people were born you told them on there 70th birthday they could have a massive party get toally boozed... and then culled it would be fine... and a better world.....

Yea im not saying that old people cant drive stupdily fast arround roundabouts... im saying when the person in front of them brakes, they forget where the brake is / what there doing.... and have shit reaction times... just ask my mums neck if he likes old people

It is not possible to say this about all old people, yes i know a few that realy should not be on the roads, i had an old woman pull out into my escort, fortunatly as i did not realy care much about that car i did not do anything with insureance etc, but there are others that i know are perfectly good, safe drivers!

For example i could say my grandpa, he is a very good driver, still goes out on the tractor for a full day of work and he is 75! in a car he is one of the best drivers i have ridden with!

It is like how older people will automaticaly stereotype young drivers into the boy racer catagory etc, where yes a certain amount are, but there are still a large amount that are not!

What people are wanting to say but arent, is that they have done all the shit like fighting germans etc, and now they are no use to the world. So they want to make hitler version 2 (known as Simpson) who will do mass genocide and rid us of oldies.

Im not arsed like, its funny watching them in cars sometimes, especially parking haha

My grandad didnt even have to take a driving test, as he drove in the war and survived, so he was deemed a good enough driver to carry on doing so! A little scary to be honest! He used to be a good driver though saying that, but over the last 2 years he has pretty much lost the ability to walk, yet he carried on driving. He bumped it soooooooo many times in that time. He is selling his car now for good though, years of telling him finally paid off! (though he didnt actually listen to us, it was the doctor who told him couldn't drive safely anymore due to not being able to see well enough or walk!)
