After fixing the cable, I decided to upgrade the server to 16gb ram (running zfs). It's also had some firmware upgrade so plex server is running. Result = able to max out gigabit and TV interface for all my stuff is prettier.

Really really nice. Gap hook was a particular fave. Crazy hard stuff, just made to look effortless and beautiful. Top work all round

My server is back running full speed. Read speed is very very good. Took a full afternoon of work and there are some touch ups to be done but pretty happy.

Hard times? Also I guess you could gamble on long term low interest rates ? I'm guessing a 5 or 3 year would be significantly cheaper to run, meaning @ £1300/month you could knock off big chunks earlier? Some maths to be done but you could end up quite a bit inside 10 years? to be honest if you can do it and it's not going to limit your life in any way then it does seem a pretty simple decision.

An update: cable is most definitely f**ked. 12ohms for a 10m wire - it's also aluminium instead of copper. The one I just found that would have done the same job is like 50m and only a couple (and also works when tested). Looks like I'm going to have to get creative with a new route.

If the current wiring is as bad as said, then that may not be the best test, and even thickness of wire may not be correct. Get an electrician in to check the lot.

no one makes a better hubs for trials than hope. If you don't want a hope then the next best is a king. If you don't want that because you want to be different then go ahead, but don't be too disappointed if it breaks quickly and doesn't get fixed under warranty. And as for bling - get a hope and just stick some glitter on it or something, seriously wtf...

Floor is 100% not possible anymore. That's why it's in there - I completely renovated the whole ground floor (in such a way that it can't be taken up without ruining it) new electrics, and plumbing, but just put the wrong cable down. It's deffo the cable - connected a longer cable above ground - speed back to normal. Couple of routes possible - outside, up into roof space along to landing, down inside airing cupboard, down/into stairs and into the under stair cupboard. Or outside along and into hallway (might look messier on outside) through 2 door frames then under skirting(yet to be fitted) and under the stairs. Gaaaaahhhh I really should have checked the cable. I don't even know why I used that one. The one I intended to use was upstairs. (Which does work).

Unfortunately no, the way the joists/walls run and the route it has to take means it's pretty much stuck. Gah. Im pissed. I'm also struggling to think of a new route that would work.

Ffs I managed to put a crap cat5e cable under the floor to the server. I say crap, it's f**king terrible. I had the choice of two and chose poorly. Now I face the mother of all routing problems, or be content with slowest transfers ever.

Ply all the way over mdf or chipboard for furniture things.

Apple replaced my old router for free, then Virgin sent me a new modem and sped up my internet by a factor of about 4 it seems foc, and no new contract.

The disappointing thing is the power. 150kw in a race is not enough. The mguk on an f1 car is 120kw!!! Needs to be 250-300 to make the racing decent. Keep the tyres aero etc the same just moar powaaar. Oh yeah - and like everyone says - better tracks

Just saw Chris Harris on cars driving through my part of town in a mclaren without a lid. It's the first I've seen one in the flesh and it looked a bit plasticky and dull.
