  1. Are they really bothering you that much?
  2. I don't know how it works but don't a lot of universities simply need UCAS points? And I would have thought that the NVQs count for UCAS points? Some courses might have specific requirements (E.g. Maths A-Level A or B - and I should probably include A* too these days, tsk) but I'd think there are some that don't. Particularly if you have a valid reason for not wanting to do A-levels, universities love people from different backgrounds who have had interesting lives.
  3. Well I like the idea of a PDA that you can use in public without looking like a complete nerd. Unfortunately now you might look like a fashion-conscious twat instead
  4. People like iPods because they are really nice to use, same with the iPhone. There's a lot of marketing and fashion stuff going on these days but it started with a simple, easy to use music player. From what I've seen in the Apple shop, the iPhone is just really nice to use too. Compare this to Windows Mobile phones which seem to be able to do a million things in a really awkward clumsy way, the iPhone just does a few things very well. Which I suppose is quite similar to the Mac OS X vs Windows argument. Windows is much more versatile, but it's not as nice to use. Yeah, but they're terrible to use compared to the iPhone. Feature-wise, my HTC phone can do everything, but it's completely rubbish and unfriendly to use (Which, to be fair, has more to do with Windows Mobile than the HTC hardware itself). I am going to get shot of my Windows Mobile phone as soon as the contract runs out. I'll keep it as a GPS with Tomtom on it, because that is about the only thing that it actually does well - probably better than the iPhone as it'll give me directions etc. Kind of ironic that they tout the iPhone's GPS functions so much...
  5. You won't get the same offer in the UK at the moment I don't think, but it might be coming I suppose. I got a free iPod mini with my iBook when I bought that (3 years ago ish). So they do do the offers from time to time.

    Cancer

I missed this first time round, that's pretty terrible news. I'd be terrified I think. On the other hand, the operation sounds like it went well, so that's cool. Best of luck with it

    The Mighty Boosh

There seem to be a couple of new genres of comedy coming out over the last few years. I mean The Office was completely different to anything before it, and then Extras and Peep Show are in the same vein. Then there's Boosh which is just brilliantly surreal, but totally different again. And then Little Britain-style catchphrase clipshows which is a pretty old genre but they've made it annoying. I reckon either you get it or you don't. Me, I quite like the Boosh (mainly the first series) and I love what I've seen of peep show. I can totally understand people not getting them though, but I wouldn't get upset about it.
  8. I wouldn't bother, Dave. If you must, google Wubi. It installs Ubuntu from within Windows, and you can remove it again from add/remove programs. A lot safer and easier for most people. I guarantee you'll get bored of it and want to remove it at some point, so this is the easiest way.
  9. Yeah they have some big magnets which will divert the course of any particles, and very sensitive sensing equipment. Positively charged things go one way, negative t'other, and the amount of curvature caused by the magnets will allow you to work out the mass of the particle. Since the machine is so damn fast, they can run a number of experiments and see what happens. Something like that anyway. Been a while since I looked at this stuff. Physics is interesting though, especially when we're looking at the most fundamental building blocks of our universe. Worth every penny.

    Game Roms

Yeah, don't be posting any links to rom sites or I'll close the topic. I've got quite a few emulators installed on my (chipped) xbox 1. It's totally awesome, playing on a TV with a proper control pad. Mega drive games are the best, they work perfectly. I've got an N64 emulator on there too, but only certain games work (Goldeneye doesn't unfortunately ).
  11. Haha, do it. You should come to the Manchester one on a club night (I think Tuesday/Thursday) and get your gate start on!
  12. That's pretty cool. I'm sure there's some merit in this design. It might work along the flat. Struggles with balls though http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1066487
  13. It's not going to work with that hub, unfortunately*. But if you get a normal hub and a rear mech, it's dead easy to run 2 gears - that's what I do. * Unless you got something bonkers like this: http://magicmechanics.com/

  15. Yeah, there is. Bigger lenses can be made to a better standard. The small (plastic) lens in a phone is nowhere near as good as on a normal compact camera. Also the sensor is tiny. Cramming loads of megapixels onto a small sensor produces loads of noise and is actually detrimental to image quality. 3MP would be fine, since camera phone photos only ever get seen on a tiny phone screen, or on facebook @ less than 1 megapixel. Plus there are other things with focussing and depth of field that mean larger lenses/cameras are better. The thing is, you can buy decent compact cameras now which are no bigger than a normal mobile phone. Stick a bit of phone circuitry on there and it would make a good camera phone. But people are stupid, and they want tiny phones with tiny cameras in them. And since it's 8 MP, it must be as good as my Canon 30d, right?
  16. It's a mobile with a camera, because the pictures will be shite.

    Bye Bye!

There are no major nerves in the chest wall really, but there are numerous cutaneous (skin) nerves that go all over the place and it's different in all people so there is no way a surgeon would know exactly where each single nerve was in everyone. In fact, you probably can't even see the nerves to avoid them. He has warned you because there is a small risk that he'll cut one of these tiny nerves. They don't really do anything important - they are just nerves which carry sensation information from the skin. I had a (keyhole) operation on my shoulder and I've been left with a small area of numbness (about 5cm^2 or something) over the tip of my shoulder from a cutaneous nerve being cut. I think it has improved over the 3 years since the operation, too (the affected area has become smaller). It's not quite completely numb, but the sensation is different - if you press on with a needle or something, it doesn't feel sharp. In fact if you've ever had a local anaesthetic, it feels exactly like that. It certainly doesn't bother me. I don't know about your exact operation, but I'd imagine this is the kind of side-effect you might encounter. It might be worth writing down your concerns and speaking to the surgeon before the op.

  19. K THIS ONE HAS ONLY ONE WHEEL THEN MMMKAY? http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=956725
  20. YOU FAIL http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=955583
  21. Mine has more wheels therefore is cooler. http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=954914
  22. This one looks immensely spazzy, but there is some logic there, I promise! http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=952269
  23. Oooops, I missed out the link (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=941351)
  24. One better EDIT: Errr, how about a link then? http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=941351
  25. I dunno, I always thought a design like that should work, but I could never do it. I guess I was just lucky this time. By the way Mark (or anyone else), have you paid for the full game? Is it worth it?
