Butcher A Deraillleur To Fit A Single Speed Mod?
nmt_oli replied to Fixed Pants™'s topic in Trials Chat
Go for it, why not. If you can mount it it will work as a tensioner, a lot of stock riders use an old mech as one. Just be careful if you cut the cage in half between the two jockey wheels, you wont be able to keep both sides of the cage on the top jokey wheel, one side will spin. just bolt through the jockey wheel to the inside cage. Will become apparent when you look closer. -
Now I havn’t personally ever ridden a comp (although am hoping to this year) but this rule seems to have been causing debate for years, and I am genuinely surprised It has lasted this long when you consider how many riders it affects. I used to HATE single speed with a passion, I only changed 1 1/2 years ago (have been riding for far to long considering my ability lol). This was because I actually used most of my 8 gears, and my saddle! I used different gears depending on the obstacle I was riding, and used my saddle and the high gears for getting to riding spots. I mainly couldn’t stand the thought of single speed as if I wanted to ride with my mates in Salisbury, I had to ride 4 miles each way! Until I got a car it just didn’t seem an option. It definitely has its advantages, having gears is useful if you can use them. I moved onto single speed as it was simpler, and I didn’t have to ride as far anymore. I do still miss gears at times. I do agree that it should be up to the rider with their personal style and preference whether they get on better with single speed or gears, both should be allowed. On the subject of putting people off who are new to the sport, I actually found the 6 gear rule has put me off competitions. It doesn’t seem welcoming at all. I ride a very very streety leeson, and I know there will be people competing on long low and silver barges (probably most). I don’t care if I’m competing against them, I don’t see it as an advantage for them cause there allowed a bike that looks less like a mtb than I’ve got, so might be able to tap higher because I cannot ride long low bikes! Everyone has what they like, and tend to stick to it, or maybe change slowly over time- that’s called progression. It does seem that the stock side of trials is spawning much more variation than the mod side. As far as I have noticed, a mod is a mod pretty much, apart from a couple of short ones which could be considered ‘streety’ – but there still most definately a mod. Stock bikes go from big BMX look-alikes, through old school MTB look-alikes, through to unrecognisable parallel tubes. Maybe the answer is something else all together, has anyone ever considered splitting the stock category? Maybe into Stock Stock and Mod Stock. Limit on wheel base /bb rise or something? Just an idea to throw up. Now I understand all you people saying “Rules are Rules, we should stick to them, they are good for us!” Well, yes I do agree, but only to a point. Again this is where progression comes in, the age of the rule is clearly shown by the minimum number of gears – 6, its been a while since that was the common number of gears at the rear of a bike on anything above kids + halfords specials. When a rule starts to cause rifts in that sports community, and appears to be limiting not only the progression of the sport at the top levels, but the ENJOYMENT of the sport at all levels the governing bodies need to stand up and take note something’s not right. IMO enjoyment is the main factor for me riding trials, its different, its challenging, it keeps me fit and I love it. I’ve been riding on and off for 5 or so years and I’m still crap (relatively speaking), and you know what, I don’t care! I’m still progressing, although slowly, I’ve made really great friends along the way and I’ve had a right good laugh, as well as burning off some fat. I’m to trials what a Sunday pub team is to football. They know there never going anywhere major, but they enjoy it. This rule effectively relegates me to the bench- I can train and have a kick about with mates, but I’m not allowed on the pitch cause I’ve got the wrong boots. That is how I feel.

Ah, made it back to uni- missed all my lectures this morning! ooops!

That sounds like a plan ticcy- i have no money for fuel atm, and i could do with coming back after. What time you leaving tommorrow? If you don't know just give me a ring.

If the Vr6 ones are the 288 you may have problems. I am not sure of how compatable they are, i think the 288mm disks are only available in 5x100 wheel bolt pattern for the mk3 VR6. I am upgrading from 239mm (8v gti) to 280mm (G60) calipers and need hubs, carriers, calpiers, 22mm master cylinder. If you have a 256mm set up (16v gti) already, then you will have the correct hubs and master.

That looks amazing. I am so so soooooooooooo tempted to get one before i next go skiing.

Perhaps he has a Kit car, or a car with a ford engine transplant? Beaten to it with an even better answer.

Oh, short notice! would love to go, may be able to, depends on family commitments on thurs. Any space left to crash at yours Rich?

Im with you there nick, it sounds horrible and completely removes any meaning! Technically yes, but different manufacturers give specs in different units, and we are still in miles over here! not Km like in the rest of europe.

Can't believe i missed this thread. I will definately be there (providing theres no stupid unavoidable circumstance).

I have to say, I kind of agree with you there. The proper rat look is more "natural", but you will find there are not many rat look cars that are 100% authentic; pretty much all will be influenced in some way. The proper rat look also suits Air-cooled car much better than water cooled. The look I’m going for is more the hoodride look, it going to be neat (if I can get the dents out) just a matt colour, its also going to have the trim gloss painted. I’m trying to be a bit different really, experimenting on a budget. The bonnet thing is something I can do on a spare, and change if I don't like it. As I want my car to last, and be practical, I don’t want to have major panels rusting. Maybe it won’t work as well on my car, as on that example it’s contrasting against very good shiny paintwork- that is NOT a rat car. Some people love it, some hate it, but it does get attention. There's a massive debate thread on Edition38 regarding the Rat look, and should it be proper or not etc. People have really huge differences in opinion. My car is a daily driver, I don't want immaculate paintwork, and it’s harder to keep it looking good. I’m going for a different look, one I haven’t seen before. Someone (I think it may have been Fred) suggested a rusty bonnet, and I didn’t like the idea, but having seen it, it looks good. It wouldn’t work on some coloured cars that’s for sure. I’m spending a lot on the interior of my car, and will be sound deadending it, to make it comfortable. Currently my car does have the proper rat look, dents, hammerite splodges, rust spots, but due to the age of the car it will never look good from that. I want people to see my car and not see it as a heap of junk with some alloys (like it looks now); I can't afford a mint paintjob, so I’m taking a risk on an idea with influences from the hoodride and rat scene, and the OEM+ brigade. Everyone’s opinion differs, not everyone will like it, but it will be respectable- something that nick pointed out to me. My car as it is, and possibly a 'proper' rat look car could be seen as a shit box car, if I turn up for interviews etc like that it doesn’t set a great first impression. I know I probably shouldn’t care what people think of my car, its mine after all- and that is the deciding factor- but the truth is I do care, not many people can say they don't care what others think to some extent. That’s why I’m posting my ideas here, trying to get a feeling of opinions, judge peoples responses. I’m still doing it for me, but sometimes you can be blinkered when you’ve got a project. For example, when most young guys buy a mini they instantly want big wheels and sportspacks, which kind of ruins the car, and invariably regret it later when it’s too late, panels have been cut etc. Realistically, my golf has minimal resale value, there are much better examples out there, I have crash damage, and rust- I would get much more than the cars worth if I broke the car. You may say why don’t I just get a new car? Ive invested in this one, it has a years T&T and most major things have been done, it’s a good reliable motor. I enjoy my projects, doing something like this is fun. I’m not going to be able to afford a real nice car till after uni, so I’m not going to try. Insurance is fun enough as it is; even though I’m 20 I’m still looking at 3550-£700 for this year TPFT, as I only have 1 full year driving (medical reasons) and 1 year no claims. I want to make my car unique, comfortable and practical to get me through uni. If I muck up on this project, I live and learn, no great loss. Blimey, that turned into a bit of a rant! Basically, I agree with you, but I still want to give it a go!

The whole thign about mourning someones death is more an apreciation of them, and leading to remembering them. I for one would definately want to mourn, yes it may hurt, but you need it. Its not about oweing anything to anyone its abotu you comign to terms with the situation. It is a tough one i suppose, i do defineatly agree with the "if we don't feel the loss of a loved one then eventually we won't know what it feels like to love." statement, i think that sums it up.

Nick, the rusts just an idea, and can be done easily on a seperate bonnet to try out if desired! The picture honestly doesnt do that car justice. The wheels do indeed look good, and have just sold my old mini wheels (the 12"ers i wont be using) so effectively its a straight swap, my two sets of wheels for the porsche ones and adaptors. The leather seats are nice, need a little bit of a clean. shame the dirvers one is quite worn (not quite as supportive as the passenger one). Might have to see if i can put the foam from another seat in it or someting. still, will be a nice edition and they are very comfy. EDIT: Some better Q pics from Adrian on no-rice forum. Mk2 slammed on 13x8 Minilights. Rusty bonnet again. Porsche Rims on Mk2:

Went to no-rice last night, got to know a few new peeps and picked up some nice bargains! Leather seats (front only): 256mm Brake set up (needs cleaning up): Also spoke to the guy with the porsche wheels, and we'll probably do a part ex. A few cars at no rice had the wheels on, i like them but they do seem to be a love or hate option on golfs. Also, interesting rat look bonnet idea! Someone suggested it previously and i didnt think it woudl look good, but it actually looks great. Pics not great quality unfortunately. Rust!

you serious fred? fun fun fun times!

Its an engineering degree biggus! There will be a lot of maths (or at least should be). Im on a proer mechanical engineering degree, and this morning i had 2 hours of thermodynamics (basically maths applied to gasses and fluids) and an hour of maths. Abotu to go back in for 2 hours of electronics, again a lot fo maths, but applied to electrical stuff! Bit gay that i suck at maths

About to say, any pics of what your tryig to argue would def help us help you. A bike frame is effectively a pin jointed framework, very structually strong in some directions, and not others. If i wasnt about to go to bed id get more involved and start drawing diagrams, ect. As people have said, a heavy bail on the side of the bike is enough to twist a frame, they are weakest side on.
-
Whats the brief for this biggus? Im intrigued. It seems like 4 wheels is a lot of complication and effort, 3 would have been easier, and eliminates articulation issues on rough ground. What size wheels are they meant to be? surely 20" wheels would make the whole thing stable and maybe stronger. Id love more info on this, you told me a little about it but didnt realsie you were this far along already.
-
Il agree with that, a bit heavy on insurance though! Insurance was 3 times the price of the car for my first year driving on my own policy.
-
That was simply awesome!

Wattage is not the be all and end all! Before i looked at the link i was thinking you were meaning portable speakers, and if so i would certainly recomend creative's little fold up jobbies. Forking amazing for what they are. If you are wanting proper desktop things, best quality would be book shelf speakers and hifi amp, but this is fiddly and almost certainly over budget. In your biget i reccomend these: http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/94471/rb/25162009393 They cost as mu ch as my creative desktop 2.1s did, but they are soo much better. Logitech is very good with speakers atm, i know someone withe the £200 odd set of 5.1s with HUGE sub, that is a seriously impressive bit of kit! optical conections and everything.
