Mercedes gone back to black with W14. No sidepod less design but still pretty narrow and again taking elements of RedBull.

If the entire grid of launch cars were to remove the livery, they would look virtually identical.....apart from Ferrari.

Before 2022 I'd agree with that in general, but in 2022 there were quite a lot of different concepts around (especially considering the rules were designed to be more prescriptive), and even now that the rules are a year old the concepts between Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes are all entirely different. Red Bull have got their super undercut sidepods that swoop down, Ferrari are going for the 'high bodywork' system with their scooped out sidepods, and Mercedes are persisting with their gash looking setup that they still seem to think has more potential.

They're not all the 2023 cars as photos are hard to find atm, but they're the most different looking set of cars we've had for a while at least. Even the Aston Martin with the random rear wing scrolls, and some of the other innovations from teams all gave them their own twist.

No surprises that Mercedes will have no choice but bring out a new bodywork aero package that is either a hybrid or evolution of both RedBull and Ferrari cars using the favourable larger sidepod design with cutaways to increase both the low pressure ground effect and upper down force to keep the mid section of the car planted on the tarmac.

Their narrow sidepod and coke bottle design has only proven that the car is pretty quick on the straights, but unstable in cornering and direction change especially in corners with crosswinds.

Even Alonso's long runs in the AMR23 just show that Mercedes aero philosophy is clearly going down the wrong path in an attempt to more raw pace. Let's not forget the Aston Martin AMR23 is basically a RedBull RB18 aero package with a Merc engine with a lesser party mode.

Alfa Romeo is also interesting with its hybrid Ferrari/RedBull design. Arguably the best car paint job and livery of the grid. Not sure what's going on with McLaren woes.

Midfield battle is gonna be very close fight.

Drive To Survive season 5 is also quite an amusing watch. Was laughing out loud when Totto was calling out with the other team principals during a private discussion about the porpoising and Christian Horner just comes out by saying "change your f**king car"

They’ve said that isn’t going to be the case.

It’s going to be a dull year. RB are miles out in front.

the AM is interesting, but the rest is pretty evolutionary, although Merc have apparently got a big bodywork upgrade coming for the first race.

Is it for the first race now? I'd read they had something in the pipeline but I was under the impression it was going to be arriving around the start of the European block of races.

Agreed though, looks like Max is going to walk away with it and it'll be left to seeing who else can perform on the day and dump Perez out of P2. Intrigued to see how Aston Martin's performance carries over to this weekend - I think Alpine will be closer to them than they appeared in testing, but where they'll both be relative to Ferrari/Mercedes at one end and Alfa Romeo/Haas/McLaren at the other seems up in the air. Just how far back McLaren are will be the other one to watch. If Lando's punching walls during testing that's probably not a great sign.

The season is going to be a snore fest..... Verstappen might win 90% of the races.

Aston ahead of Mercedes-AMG is massive, and Ferrari might end the season 4th fastest car....

from the race - Williams getting a point was great and Russell asking Merc to move Hamilton out of his way near the start was hilarious

I'd imagine more than 90%. It definitely feels like a 2014 throwback. Max had so much in hand in that race! Perez was close to him at points, but I don't think he's consistent enough (or good enough) to really challenge Max that often. It feels more Hamilton-Bottas for them rather than Hamilton-Rosberg.

From the tone at Ferrari it sounds like they're well aware that their car isn't fast enough, it munches tyres and they still have reliability issues. Mercedes have admitted their car is shit, and the upgrade they're planning is based on a flawed concept so is barely going to bridge the gap as it is now, let alone the gap once everyone else has developed in-season.

The Aston Martin (by which I mean Alonso) positioning will be interesting this year, just in terms of them being a spoiler in some instances, but we'll see once we get to some less outlier-y tracks I guess.

It's pretty remarkable how many teams have f**ked it though. Alpha Tauri are nowhere, McLaren have shit the bed, Mercedes wasted last season and effectively at least the first part of this season with a car that just doesn't work - there's usually a team that is way off the pace, but to have so many off in different ways when there's not really been extenuating circumstances is odd. Like when Haas decided to not work on their car for a year to get ready for the rule changes, it wasn't surprising they sucked. That's not really the case for AT/McLaren/Merc.

The pace of Verstappen RedBull car when he breezed past Hamilton and George was insane.

Both Mercedes and McLaren have some head scratching to do with their cars.

Never truly appreciate how rapid these cars are until I saw this at Monza. Doesn't look real especially the overtake

WTF was that at the 2023 Australian GP!

3 Red Flags, multiple crash at the final restart with 2 laps to go.

Stewards and Race Control trying to figure how to finish the race.

Well whatever happens, this will be the most talked about race event. Netflix probably lapping this up for DTS season 6.

That video is quite something. The speed changes are insane.

It does re-affirm that I couldn't give two hoots about going to see an F1 race in real life though. Sat in the same seat for a couple of hours, possibly (highly likely) missing most of the action doesn't seem that fun.

Borefest with the exception of Saturday quali. Slightly interesting as the showers fell but not enough to change impact of the race.

Barcelona will give some indication of how competitive the Merc upgrades as well as teams working over the summer break as to how they can copy that intricate RB19 underfloor. Nice one Perez.

Great GP with plenty of action throughout. Incredible performance with McLaren/Lando

Not sure what to make of the Brad Pitt F1 movie project, although from what he was saying in interview with Martin Brundle, it sounds as if he wants to create a unique movie visual experience that was seen from Top Gun Maverick.

It’s just so dull. Well done the FIA….

It’s nice to see mclaren travelling around near the front as a pair of cars again, and having a bit of chrome on!
