Ok so the time is soon approaching when I'll be wanting to go full frame.

I'm looking at buying at 70-200 f/2.8 VR (first edition) secondhand, a 24-70 f/2.8 probably new as it'll be the lens I use 95% of the time.

Body-wise, I'm looking secondhand at the D700 and D3. Which is better for image quality and high ISO performance? D700 would be nicer given it's smaller size. The D600 looks ok, but I'd rather have a secondhand D700, a bit like choosing a secondhand D300s over a D7000.

My old kit I'll probably keep as backup - as well as the D300s I have a Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 that cost a lot 3 years ago, but it's so battered I doubt I'd get much for it...

D700 and D3 are identical in terms of image quality and ISO performance. Same sensors, same image processor.

D3 obviously has longer battery life thanks to the hulking great batteries, but obviously there's the added bulk that goes with it.

D600 doesn't have as tough a build as the D700, although the image quality is a huge step up that's not much cop if it can't stand up to as much abuse and it decides to cut it's life short right when you don't want it to.

D600 over D700.

Ive got both, and although the D600 is less of a PRO camera..it certainly doesnt mean its not good! Its Beltin!

Thanks for the advice. I haven't yet looked at a D600 but from what I've read it doesn't have the tough build quality I'd want, i.e. a full magnesium frame. This was why I sent my D7000 back to the shop and bought a D300s instead 2 years ago.

The D800 is more than I want to be spending right now, given that I've barely shot any photos this year, which really leaves the D3 and D700. Image quality, dynamic range and high ISO performance should be fine for everything I'd be planning to do with it, so I guess there's not a lot in it apart from size/weight. The 100% viewfinder coverage of the D3 would be a plus, as would longer lasting batteries. Build-wise, decent weather sealing is probably a feature of both - I know for sure that cheaper-built cameras than my D300s wouldn't have survived half the things I put it through, so this is very important to me.

This weekend I went along to the Cambrian Rally which is recognised as one of the best rallies in the U.K. I had originally planned to film the event, but after a few problems (like the forest stage I went to being cancelled), I decided to just take some photos and just enjoy the event.

I ended up going to the final stage of the rally (SS9) which was a short route around the Great Orme in Llandudno, with some of the top cars breaking the 3 minute mark.

I thought I would post some on here as I know there are a number of TF guys who are car nuts, so hopefully they will take some interest :P

The Ford Escort was a very popular entry.

Witnessing a Lancia Stratos fly past was very special, this one driven by Steve Perez.

Everyone seemed to be taking snaps of the cars.

The crowds got bigger as the sun began to fall, with the last few drivers taking to the stage.

So close yet so far, this 206's clutch just couldn't hold out, failing at the start line.

The long walk back to the services.

A few Group B cars also took to the final stage, providing demonstrations for the crowds.

Not sure of the differences between the mk1 and mk2, or if they're worth hundreds of pounds more... But I've heard and see some goddamn exceptional things from Tamron lately, much to my surprise.

It's had me considering buying their 24-70 2.8 VC for a while now as the images it produces are a noticeable whack better than Nikon's infamous 24-70.

Actually the only thing stopping me is my penchant for primes... And wanting to buy better primes instead of a zoom to accompany them.

In fact on further research it seems the "Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD Nikon" (snappy name) comes out as the best overall image quality out of all zoom lenses on Nikon FX format according to DxO mark. Bonkers.

Problem for me is that I don't like carrying too many lenses. I do like primes though.

Interesting what you say about the Tamron. I wonder how build quality compares. It's half the price of the VR II...

Might wanna check out Matt Granger's comparison videos, part 1 is here

I own the 70-300 VC which is part of the same 'SP' (superior performance) line of lenses and having used the canon 70-200 f/4 L, I have to say the build quality of the Tamron is far better, as are the focus and zoom rings. Obviously this isn't apples for apples as you are talking about the 2.8 versions and the Nikon 70-200, however I just thought I should chip in to say that you should really consider the Tamrons as they really are excellent lenses.
