poolside fashion faux pas Posted September 10, 2005 Report Share Posted September 10, 2005 hey i just wanted to ask some peeps whether roofing tar rubbed onto your rims is a good idea or not. yea it does make it quite grippy especially when you're on the back wheel...however there is that god awful screeching noises anytime your brake pads go anywhere near the rim. Now it's ok again, so sayeth me. TF sucks sometimes :- Anyway, I don't really see the problem with tar. To have decent brakes that hold, you have two options: 1) Set your brake up perfectly, nice bleed, find some good pads, get a nice booster, grind your rim every couple of weeks. 2) Use tar. My grind wore out and i couldn't be arsed to re-do it, so i whacked a bit of tar on there (like the good ol' days!) and i thought it felt horrible, didn't hold as well and i had to keep fannying around with blocks of sticky black sheet. Oh, and to remove it just dabble a bit of white spirit on a rag and give the rims a wipe. Leave it to dry and your away. I feel for learning It Is a bad Idea because It Is really cheating yourself. What I'm trying to say Is that If you can make a gap using tar AND no tar then you can successfully make that gap. My opinion anyways. I used to use the stuff alot but felt It wasn't really helping my technique/ learning because It made me think I could do things that I really shouldn't be making. ash. It was far too sharp, I couldn't slow down, I stopped. no matter how light I touch the lever, it was BANG. Plus it tends to stick the brake to the rim and cause aggro. Just set your brake up well! James Quigley Posted September 13, 2005 Report Share Posted September 13, 2005 Grind, Plaz Pads and a good bleed (if running a maggie). I've had my grind (more like a light scratching) and plaz pads for almost 3 months, and I have never had to re-grind, my pads look brand new even after months (no wear) and the brake works like all brakes should AMAZING. I also used to use tar religiously but for under 20 quid you could get some decent pads and never have to worry, until re-order time that is.
