Hi there, I work in the workshop of CRC and we send back a lot of frames that are not welded quite straight. This shouldn't usually affect the ride of the frame as the defects are usually very small and barely noticable.

Not to mention the over complication...

Have you tried a new headset in it? My echo teams bottom cup fell out and you were able to spin it about when forks were in etc. Rocked and make so much noise. One FSA pig later and it was perfect, normal tight fitment. Just a shit alloy headset.

It was one of them alloy deng echo headsets on my Team, it was less than 3 months old when it was rocking.

Right, the only thing left is frame and cups really going by your description. My echo team (cnc headtube one) done this after not long at all. Fearing the worst when I was able to take the headset out by hand I replaced it with a new one which was a super tight fit as you would expect. Problem solved.

Started off on a 14" Blunt Hardtail thing Brisa b26d - awful geo, mate still has it Base TA26 - Loved it but wasn't flash enough, wish I'd have kept it Onza T-pro - fancied mod but wasnt for me... yet Koxx Levelboss 1065 - Didn't really like it Curtis T1 comp - Rode nice but didn't really fit in Zoo Pitbull 06 - Didn't get on with it at all! Yuck Echo Hifi - Like it, had fun and wanted low BB again Echo Control short - Best bike since the TA26 for feel but I wanted mod again Echo Team (first of CNC headtube) - Sold recently due to starting a business Onza T-pro - Bought today for the small sum of £100 and only needs a freewheel if I'm being picky.

Best I have used is the shimano durace stuff, I could only find it in small tubs at £5 each though so am now using the Park Polylube 1000 and its ok, not half as long lasting as the shimano stuff though.

The bike that jumps out for me is the Specialized Tricross Sport. This is a true do it all long distance touring style bike. It has drop bars like a road bike but fairly high riding position for comfort and more hand positions that a riser/flat bar so more comfort that way. Slightly thicker tyres and rims than a traditional road bike, while still taking a good pressure and rolling fast they are more comfortable. The gearing is closer to that of a hybrid/mtb than a road bike too so plenty of range with a triple chainset with a more MTB ratio set up to allow it more scope than just pure tarmac roads. Brilliant bike for the type of person you are talking about, nice a light. I don't think you will get a better bike for the job. About £700 but your local shop can be talked to to get that down.
