I have done a fair bit of googling and the cheapest I can find is £1229, even if I got 10% off RRP it is still £130. But I can't find anything near what I want to pay. £1000 is my target price and what I can justify. I remember at Christmas last year Goldsmiths were doing Carrera's for £1495 on 12 month interest free; would I be better waiting a month or two and scooping up a deal? Do jewlers ususlly do big headline deals at Christmas to tempt people up to buying something of that value? Or do they hold the price for high demand? I am a bit confused to be honest. A smooth suited up business friend of my Dad's asked me if it was a Tag or Rolex, I lol'd. I doubt you'll see it online for any less. Certainly with Rolexes, any official stockists are tied into a contract and if they advertise at less than RRP they'll lose their rights to sell the watches so you won't see huge discounts online. On the other hand, the watches allegedly have a huge markup on them so there's room for price flexibility if they want to sell. I presume Tag have a similar business model. Best option is to ask around a few jewellers. Some independent places might do a deal. I can't help thinking that the formula 1 is a bit... Chavspirational. I don't want to feel as though I have spent a grand on a watch that I don't actually want because it isn't a Carrera. (which is what I REALLY want) I'm thinking it might be best to go into a jewelers and just try and wing it as best I can. I've spotted "Iconicwatches" have got a healthy chunk off an Aquaracer, and I could get one for just within my maximum budget. I've been rocking my dads Rolex Datejust Oyster for the last 6 months which despite being a high quality watch is still 40 years old and looks dated, the mainspring has weakened and it stops when left over night. He gave it to me because of that, but now I am going to resign it to a draw until I can afford to service and replace the spring. The Aquaracer is nice, I'd go for a Rolex GMT, personally. I just don't imagine the Formula 1 to be a timeless classic. Can you get a used Carrera for a grand? Fact of the matter is if you can afford to spend £1000 on a watch then chance are you can afford to spend £1200 on a watch. And if you can't you probably shouldn't be buying one. I had a 4 grand watch - for about a week. Doesn't matter what it is, because all it is is ego masturbation anyway personally at the moment I'm happy with shit tons of £50 watches instead of one that I'm always scared to wear. This is in no way saying 'don't buy an expensive watch', just that they're overrated until you can have them and afford to lose them. I borrowed a Rolex for a while everyone automatically assumed it was fake due to my position in the company etc. so gave it back quick sharp, because of the huge profile I was always banging it on stuff and it was too heavy really love my current watch. There is no ego massaging going on. I'm going into town today so I will report back then, having slept on it I think I would like something a bit nicer than an F1. Now seems like a great time to do it. I have inherited premium bonds, so I would like to withdraw some and keep the rest as a sensible thing. I went into town this morning and went to a couple of shops, tried a couple of tag's in Goldsmith and left with my heart set on a Carrera and thought I was going to either have to wait a couple more month and save or to just do the rest on 6 months interest free. I bumped into a mate of mine in town and he took me across to some pokey old clock repair shop and said he knew there was some nice bits in there. The guy had a 1997 Omega Sea Master which had been refurbished with genuine Omega parts by an Omega dealer and he had taken it in payment for a grandmother clock. It was really really nice to be fair, much classier than the Tag's I had tried in Goldsmiths and on a par with the Carrera. It's a fair amount cheaper too, he wants £800 for it which is a fair price from my 20 min's of phone research. My only worry is that I don't like the design of the hands, they look a bit clumsy. Either way, I'm going to have a chat with my mate who's into watches and see what he thinks. I wanted a new watch really, but if I can get something better for less then I'm into that. They are awesome fakes and possibly the real thing from the actual factory. Pashley26 Posted October 3, 2012 Author Report Share Posted October 3, 2012 (edited) I have decided that it would be a much nicer idea to have my Rolex rebuilt rather than purchasing a new watch. My dad gave me the Rolex after all so it has huge value to me. I package it up and sent it off to a specialist in the Midlands today, I am worried about it and just hope nothing goes wrong with it. I took some pictures so I can have a nice before and after. I haven't worn it for a while and the date had stuck I am going to get it repolished and have the glass replaced, as well as the movement reassembled and springs retensioned. It needs a new dial trim ring too, I cannot afford a solid silver one so I am opting for plated. I hope it matches! The bracelet will be roughly £280, because the current one isn't genuine. The glass is £110 because that is off a different watch and the rebuild will be £250.
