actually - I've been pretty happy with my last 2 dell boxes at work (apart from the buzzing noise the new one makes but that goes away if you kick it) I just think their TFT screens are shite and overpriced

download the demo from autodesk.com for legal free usage try to find a copy of Autodesk GMax. It's a free version that doesn't include the renderer but does have most of the polygon modelling tools (it's a bit out of date compared to max 2008 but the basics are there) and the interface is basically the same. that said - if you're wanting decent free modelling software the the PLE version of Maya is more up to date than GMAX and should be a lot easier to find (again - autodesk.com). You might also consider softimage XSI - there's a free version of XSI v4.2 for modding halflife 2 that came out with the game so you should still be able to find that. Max shits on all the others as far as modelling tools are concerned though

I'd buy this (in fact I did) samsung are better than dell note the 3000-1 contrast ratio and the 2ms response time - oh and the £90 you save unless you're desparate to run at 1920 x 1200 or absolutely must have a 24" monitor so you can tell your mates you've got one and dont really care about picture quality I'd suggest you don't buy either Dell

christ, the fat laptop was intended as a joke but if you look at the cost of the big macbook pro it seems it wasnt that much of a joke at all. I wouldn't buy one like that personally - That sort of money gets you a proper computer with an 8 core Xeon, 16GB o Ram , SAS hard drives (look it up) and a quadroFX5600 with 1.5GB o memory on it mac users are fun - I'll stop now

Still, if you insist on paying out vast sums of money for a substandard PC running a crippled version of freeBSD with a shite GUI that's your business. back to the original point... laptops are generally a bit gay if you want to do any serious work, if you want it for web browsing, looking at pictures, writing documents etc. just invest in a decent screen and a massive hard drive above all other features, anything Vista capable will handle your day to day music/photo/porn needs very comfortably. Don't buy one for playing games - you're better off getting a 350 quid laptop for porn and putting the rest of the money into a desktop for the games - at least you can upgrade the bugger later on.
