    Isn't it about time that politicians had a regulator just like the banks do? How many of the leave voters will be moaning when the cost of everything goes up substantially? I dare say we've not exited the last recession yet and already prices have increased and people are being squeezed due to the fall in sterling.

    We import forgings from Romania (simply because there is no longer the skillset/industry in the UK to make them competitively), this morning we paid a bill for the last batch we had and it was £1000 more than it was yesterday. That's an increase in cost equivalent to 3 additional sets of forgings! We then have to machine them and supply them to Severn Trent Water.

  7. I have an sdg bell rl ti on the intense and the santacruz, comfiest saddles I ever used, not all that cheap unless you can pick up second hand though. Had a quick ride on a spoon before now and found it equally comfy short term (like 10 minutes) so will probably look to get one when my current snow leopard sdg finally wears out (it's going thin on the back)

Well the initial shim stack test was a resounding failure Almost zero compression damping and altering the stack preload made no difference so I think it was far too stiff and bleeding back past the rebound and compression glide rings. Reverting back to the poppet valve for now to check that still works OK (no reason why it shouldn't) and will play with shim stacks once I've got a threaded sleeve glued onto the cartridge to save having to glue the bung in every time. Onwards and upwards
  9. Indeed, 1936 cammy 500 single, rigid frame, girder forks - certificated flying mile at Brooklands of a little over 98mph. It was my grandads 21st and I inherited it age 11, I'm ashamed to say it still isn't on the road but I'm looking at it as a super long term project! I'll not mention my dads Vincents or my uncles Brough superiors (note multiples ).
  10. It's so you can change up gears whilst cranked over on a left hander, don't need to hook your toe underneath so you gain vital ground clearance. I think all bikes are naturally 1 down the rest up, brit or jap, but typically jap gearboxes are linkage driven so very easy to switch it. My '36 Norton international is 1 down 3 or 4 up I think.

Updated cartridge is now assembled, ready to put back into the chassis Guessed at the shim stack, trying a simple crossover with 15-14-8-12-11-10-8 diameter shims, all 0.15mm thick apart from the 8mm ones at 0.2mm thick. Left it with the shim stack controlling both high and low speed compression, only riding it will tell me if it's crap or not. Not a massive issue to alter the stack now though. Super happy with how it's gone together

Oh and to further the compression damper redesign, I've just realised a method by which I can have both an adjustable low speed and high speed damper circuit on the forks rather than trying to control both circuits with a single shim stack. So my options are: - Combined low speed and high speed compression damping handled by a single crossover shim stack. Advantages of this are that the overall compression range can be altered externally albeit low speed would require an internal shim change to adjust it. or Seperate low speed compression port orifice with the shim stack handling purely high speed compression duties. Advantages of this is that the low speed compression can be altered quickly and easily whilst high speed would need a tear down to alter the shims. Any clever suspension people? edit: look what arrived this morning!

  15. Any slopestyle bike no? I wouldn't expect the rear suspension to be a major help with trail traction, I believe it's designed just as a cushion for landing and is invariably stiff and very heavily damped.
  16. Adding to the forks situation, k-tech are very kindly sending me a bunch of shims so I can tune the compression damper. Does this mean that I'm now sponsored by them? Ought to get a couple of k-tech stickers to chuck on the bike really

The words you're looking for are orthographic projection 99%* of the engineering world seems to use 3rd angle, that is where the projected elevation is displayed on the same side that the projection is taken from (as opposed to 1st angle where it is displayed on the opposite side), only a few places use 1st angle these days (us included because we're an old company and stuck in our ways!). Quite astonished that you actually drew it in 1st though, 3rd is a more natural (and currently taught) method of draughting. Even after 25+ years of creating technical drawings, 16 of which have been in a 1st angle only environment I still occasionally slip back to training and start drawing in 3rd *statistics brought to you today by onehundredandthirtypercentaccuratestatistics.com™

Following the debacle with my suspension forks that got ruined and the subsequent design or replacement components that I've been looking to have machined in order to restore the forks to glory.... Got a quote for the two components from a machinist we use at work, came in at just shy of 300 quid Needless to say that is unfortunately far more than it's worth to ressurect the cartridge so I resigned myself to using the forks as nothing more than spare chassis parts. Mentioned it to our purchasing manager (who also rides mountainbikes) who promptly got on the phone, pointed out that we have just sent them 50k of orders in the last month and persuaded them to machine the bits as a favour I shall be sending a nice bottle of something to the machinist for his troubles, just got to grab some shims from k-tech and will have a proper shim stack compression damper in my forks

  21. You're extending your gearstick aren't you? Presuming you're trying to extend the cable for your reverse gear selector ring thingymajig. Can you not feed the cut end of the cable in loose, fit the new nipple and pull the slack back through? Is it feasible to have the clamp anchor at the other end? Failling that, if you know the exact lengths of inner and outer then venhill may be able to make you up a cable to suit with the correct nipples on; might mean sending them the old cable to match up with mind.
  22. Just need a nipple of the right size, easy enough to make one if you can't buy one. You would pretty much need a double ended nipple clamp as per this: - http://www.gsportbmx.co.uk/products/brakes/brakes_home.html Bit of Ø3mm steel bar, 7mm long, cross drill 1.5mm then drill & tap M2 from one end. Cable goes through the cross drilled hole and socket cap head screw clamps the cable. Machine from hex bar (so you can get a load of torque on it) if the clable load is high.

  25. It's not cam follower float is it? Does the lumpy cam need lumpy springs to go with it? Would be far more apparent at higher revs though. Is it at engine timing or faster /slower, that might help identify the source.
