Mate of mine needs a new dvd drive for his 360, can someone point me in the right direction?

if he doesnt know what hes doing, its not that simple. and he possibly risks being banned from live for doing it.

basically the drive holds a key that identifies it to the xbox, so you cant just rip a drive out of one and whack it in another.

so he basically needs to go the same extent as flashing it to play backups(google jungleflasher tutorial), only rather than whacking modded firmware onto the drive, he has to unplug the one drive, plug the new in, and then dump the original firmware back onto that drive.

reason he risks being banned from live, is something no one can confirm or deny, but basically the xbox360 can now detect an error message when the xbox is powered on with no drive connected to the sata port(and unless hes going to buy an external power kit for it, which means hell be spending a lot on something to repair his xbox), logs this error code and sends it to microsoft next time he signs into live. This can *apparently* get you banned, as modifying the console in any way (which basically means breaking the warranty even if its expired in any way) is a bannable offence. chances are he wont like, buts its worth bearing in mind.

that is assuming his drive powers on correctly and hasnt just sh*t the bed completely.

however new lasers for the drives run to about £9, and a drive is £15-25 brand new, dependant on which drive is in it.

you cant just pop the old one out and put the new one in, it has to be reflashed with the original KEY string from the firmware and spoofed acordingly (depends what drive you buy to put in)

also you have to read the fulkl firmware from the original drive meaning you need specific equpitment to do so.

if you cant do it pm me
