The Car Thread

Good day out on Saturday at Blyton Park in a sprint event, sharing my old car with the new owner (sold it end of last year)... He had a track day at the circuit the day before to practice, plus I was going first so his runs would be on warm tyres - I was worried he might beat me...!

A class win for both of us, him by 2 seconds and me be 4 and a half, that'll do B) He also won his class again on Sunday with a slightly quicker time, and every other driver I've coached before (another 3 of them) won their classes on both days too. Really chuffed that things are starting to come together.

Stick it on a RR.  Surely thats cheaper than getting them redone?

That's not exactly a good way to measure. They make incredibly various powers as standard.

Easiest way is to stick the timing tools in to see if they are aligned.

It's actually really not that obvious. They idle lumpy as f**k standard so it's hard to tell but if it's done badly you're 20-30bhp down.

And being 20-30bhp down on power isn't obvious?!

No, not if you haven't driven one of them before. Was just a rough figure, can be more, can be less.

Fact of the matter is, do it right first time and don't scrimp on important shit. Simple.

Okay so an update on the 182 timing belt scenario...

Drove his 182 today on his dads private land, belts done 5k ago at a renault specialist, drove and pulled nice! rough iPhone 0-60(ish) timing and various pulls through the gears.

The black one im buying is quicker on both 0-60 and pull from a high gear low revs and the VVT 'feels' like it comes alive sooner.

Both limiters feel the same. They idle like shit the same, typical 182 idle...

Steering feels better on his, also BRAKES, they are most certainly deadly.... cheap quick fix for about £100.

I accidently a set of -30mm Eibach springs, DS3000 pads, Walbro fuel pump, decat and carbon airbox. Then some special 7.5w50 HKS branded oil and a HKS filter.

380bhp, flat shift and launch control please.

I take it you're enjoying it then mate? What is flat shift?

Love it!

It's just so good to drive, I wasn't ever interested in them at all. I only bought it because it was cheap and everyone said they were really good.

Flat shift means you can keep your foot planted on the throttle and as soon as you press the clutch the clutch switch momentarily cuts the ignition so the time that you are on and off powering the drive train is minimal. It's cool but I won't ever use it. I will use the launch control to scare people at traffic lights.

I'm removing my aircon at the weekend which will save me ~25kg along with a vibration weight which is another 2kg. Hoping to get the car down to 850kg by this time next year and with the new engine that will take me to 320bhp/tonne which should be a hoot.

i'll be going for this floor colour too. Painting at the weekend also.

Yeah he was a bit of a chunky money compared to TF's resident LegoMan. He doesn't actually live there either - the other chap in the photo does and I assume had offered to help with his seats/similar. Him and his missus (I assume) have a pair of rather tidy looking Clios though - one red one grey/silver.

Quite a few people on our road are playing with reasonably tidy cars recently. And then there's this guy...

I'm shamelessly sharing a video I've been coerced into commentating on. I know it's not real life, potentially extremely sad, but it's fun. It's also loosely car related. Only way I can race at the moment!
