I don't even know why I'm comparing the two I think really you've got to compare them to the 500 rather than the 126, remember the Mini came out in 1959. Thought some of you might be interested... -------------------------------------------------------------- Hello all, Some of you know me, most of you don't - I thought I'd take the chance to upload a few photos and words to show my latest car and also my previous. My car journey started a little later than most, when I acquired a 1.1 106 at the age of 27, which stayed with me for about 2 months. A truly shocking car, but I appreciated it as it got me on the road and was kindly donated to me by my mum when my grandad died and she inherited his car. I quickly upgraded from the 106 to an almighty 90bhp Leon TDI S, which although slow, was comfortable and cheap to run. I grabbed a set of 17" starfish alloys and lowered it about 50 / 60mm all round and it handled pretty sweet with the uprated ARB. Here's a couple of photos of it: Anyway, after a year and a half of ownership I decided it was time to get something with a little more power behind it. I sold the trusty Leon for £1,500 and travelled from Bristol to Hastings to collect my new TDI FR. Unfortunately for me, only 35 miles into my return journey the car started to misbehave - doing around 70 in 6th gear the revs dropped to 2,000 and wouldn't go any higher despite me dropping down to 5th. With my speed decreasing and cars now flashing me to move out of the way, I dropped it down to 4th and floored it - still nothing. Hazards on, I rolled into the slower of the two lanes and put the car in neutral. Luckily for me I was on a hill and there was a lay by at the bottom. So I rolled into the lay by and called the AA, then spent the next couple of hours shivering and cursing my new purchase. Finally the orange lights filled my new car and my spirits were slightly lifted. The guy from the AA took a quick look under the bonnet and then fired the car up, to be greeted by a strange bang and lots of black smoke - followed by clouds of blue. We both knew instantly that it was game over. 170 miles from home and with no AA cover to get myself towed back, I was facing the fact that the next couple of days was to be expensive. My policy covers me for 10 miles of towing, so the chap put my car on the back of the van and proceeded to dump me in the middle of nowhere as it was all he could do. I got a lift back to Hastings to stay with friends and work out a plan. Short story, after 2 weeks of the car being sat in the middle of nowhere I finally got it towed to a garage where it was treated to a new turbo and some front brake pads. £800 later I headed back to Hastings to go for take two of the journey. Although the car got me home, it has started making the siren noise that the turbo made the first time, so I'm quite concerned it's going to go again - time will tell! Anyway, on to the photos. I got the car very cheap because it's not in the best condition, inside or out - my project is to tidy it up as cheaply as possible, no panel pulling or re-sprays. The day before the SWDubs meet was the first treatment it got, here's some before and after shots for you all... A little scratch remover applied, with the help of a rotary polisher... And then a little Auto Glym... The end result... Here's a before and after of the engine bay, it really was filthy! And the token beading shot! Having never built an engine before, I decided to have go at creating a bottom end for this year's race car from one broken, one scrapyard and one £62 eBay engine... Spent bloody ages measuring, cleaning and checking everything. Just finished putting it back in - started first time, bob on oil pressure and a nice stable idle. Although my dad was always into cars in a big way, I remember chains and engines hanging from the roof of our garage when I was really little. Interestingly I'm contemplating buying a 'Tragic Track Car' of which a 1.1 106, just like my old one, would be on the list. Missed one recently really local - MOT failure (emissions), all new tyres, £150! I think the requirements would be: a 'shit' car but with a decent chassis (eg. it's the bottom of the range model but there is a 'sporty' one at the top), under a ton, under 100bhp, cheap consumables, no turbo, manual, a diesel would be a bonus, RWD would be amazing but I don't think it's possible (I'd class an old BMW as 'too good'), 4x100 wheel fitment would be ace too as I already have some wheels / tyres to go on... Probably looking at MOT failures or write-offs too. Any ideas people?! So far I've got the 106, Saxo, Nissan Micra (used a lot in autotesting), but not a lot else. As long as the handling balance is there (or it's oversteer biased), any car will achieve said goal. Terminal understeer is a big no-no, it's seriously frustrating, but some additional bracing at the back end via Mr Welder would sort that. Plus it'll give me something to do :$ If it's something crap and weird and unexpected you'd get a lot of people chatting to you about the car, which is half the fun of track days, plus if you ever overtook anything you'd wee yourself with excitement, haha. Fair one, I definitely get that thought process in terms of limits – much prefer driving the Mini than my car because it's far closer to the limits. Then again, if I was regularly on the track I'd want to make sure that I could reach the limits in whatever I had and then get something with higher limits. To each their own! EDIT: Not debating, although it probably came out that way... I'll look forward to seeing what you end up with! The thing is, when you do have a car with higher limits it's frustrating. You never get a clean lap, you're worried about breaking it and ending up with a big bill, and if you do bin it you're going way faster. Nothing wrong with a bit of healthy discussion - everyone's different! Polo... not a bad should dude. Forgot they'd be 4x100 as well, nice one. What about a Lupo or Arosa? I know pretty much nothing about it other than it's red, has been off the road a couple of years but had an MOT before then. Could be good for some spares or a project for someone? It's in Surrey. I'm obviously tempted, but if I put another car on the driveway I'm going to have more problems than finding the money to go racing...
