I know you're all bored of it by now, but the photographer from Donington has put his pictures up.

The Evo I spent 5 laps chasing and passed eventually. I had a LOT of fun with that Evo.

My friend Sam's new MX-5, which is a beast!

There were some great cars on the day!

I've done some test driving my car and come to the conclusion that the offside rear suspension dives whilst braking when reversing; when braking forwards the front of the car dives equally as expected. Turning hard left results in more body roll than turning hard right so I think it's either er the offside rear damper or spring failed!

So, here's the scenario, answers on a postcard please:

I've been offered a car for free.

I'm insured on my car with Brentacre, fully comp. This allows me to drive any car, third party.

I'm also named driver on the mrs' Punto.

I got a third party quote on the free car and it's around £600. No way.

What can I do to get the insurance cheaper? Give it to a friend and drive it third party? Is that even legal?

What is it and are you planning on keeping said car? The car would need to be insured by your friend if you have it to him for you to then drive,  even then he's meant to be the primary user so you could come unstuck insurance wise. Cancel your policy and take out a new one with both cars added or simply add the free car onto your schedule :)

It's a 206 Quicksilver. Idea behind it is to use it for commuting, as my Eunos needs work and is too thirsty for daily use.

the 206 is only a 1.4 but still manages to be £200 more than the Eunos to insure. If I end up paying £600 for insurance, I may as well just not bother as I won't save anything.

I'll see if I can add it to my Brentacre policy, otherwise I'll just have to decline the offer, which will be a shame.

Even more boring.

Today I had the software upgraded on the Abarth's ECU, so now it's basically the same as a Biposto.

(this is a Biposto)

Fiat_695_Abarth_Biposto.jpg

Now I get even more pops and bangs. The ECU still needs to learn, it's basically like a fresh map so it doesn't know how much advance it can use, and how lean it can run. Apparently it's ''about'' 190bhp now but should creep up to the 200 mark as the ECU finds it's feet again and I get a decent intake on it.

For a ghetto turbo build, just how important is it to have totally equal length tubes for the manifold? Space is minimal to say the least as the inner wing and steering link are very close

When I watched the mightycarmods lads building Gramps (turbo EJ36 engine), they used different length tubes in the manifolds and also from each manifold up to the turbo. They questioned it, and turbo yoda just said "meh just get the gasses to the turbo".

What turbo are you going to be running and how much power are you trying to squeeze out of it? If its something relatively small-framed, or you're not really looking to run the tits off it and eek out every last bit of flow then realistically it'll be fine on unequal length runners. Nice to have, sure, but then you get into the realms of working out which rev range you want it to perform best in to time pulses and all sorts of additional bullshit. If they're close it'd be nice, but far from essential.

For reference, these are currently the best flowing aftermarket k04 manifolds. Equal length runners would be nice for scavenging etc, but realistically make negligible difference relative to the work required in making it happen.

No idea on turbo yet, whatever is small and cheap really as I can't run too much boost, I guess another 30 odd bhp would be realistic without introducing lots of issues. I've been reading about ramming a turbo on the 924 na engine and it seems within my abilities and still allows me to use the current mechanical fuel injection but i'm not sure if it is worth the hassle against fitting another engine (VAG 1.8T or Saab 2.3T) which in the long run would be more sensible just more expensive initially. I fear I may just be wasting my time thinking about it, but it's good to learn these things!

I had noticed that Subarus use an unequal length manifold stock, contributing to their odd sound.

Oh and in car progress news...

New shocks and springs for the Astra as they were dead (leaky shocks+snapped spring)

Metal drop links as the standard plastic ones keep popping open

The car now doesn't rattle like hell on bumpy roads, and (unrelated) is achieving over 50 mpg since running some Forte through it and cleaning the map sensor

One very snapped hydraulic ramp, hopefully they will replace it as that is VERY poor!

The way that ramp has snapped is pretty scary - has it gone over time or was it a pretty instantaneous break? Not while you were under there I hope?!

Just sorted out insurance for another year - great service from Greenlight again. Had a decent chat to Neil about all sorts of petrohead shit whilst getting it sorted and goo to go for another year. Bingo :)

How much are you paying through Greenlight Luke? I need to sort mine out now.

In the order of £400. 11 years NCB etc helps, as does being kept under armed guard I guess, but they weren't much more on the old Leon previously (though that was in Noss so hardly a crime hotspot) :P

I've literally just renewed mine, niether Greenlight or Sky could help me out, ended up going with HIC for £350 :)

Manifold porn makes me want to buy shiny things.

Damn, Driftland is hard work! The tight techy section doesn't suit a big Volvo, that's my excuse anyway. I bumped into a huge curb but I think everything is ok. The turbo is pushing a good amount of oil past the seals (even the idle control valve was pushing oil out :ermm:), and the power steering is still knackered, but everything still pretty much works so a successful day in my mind. Might have to swap out that turbo though. Also considering changing the front tyres because the two times I've been out drifting the weather has been good, and I'm on rainsports.

No video this time, the camera angle was poop.

I'm looking at selling my Astra but finding it hard to put a price on it. Its a 2005 1.9 SRI (16v 120bhp model) 3 door in black metallic. It has done 145k and has a partial service history. The car has had all this in the past year:

SH but as good as new genuine back box

Sachs DMF+clutch+slave

Fresh box oil

All suspension components upfront replaced apart from springs and dampers

Rear springs and dampers replaced

All pads and discs replaced

New front caliper

Water pump+cam belt replaced

AC radiator replaced+gas refill

Thermostat replaced

4 new glow plugs

2 new front tyres (premium) and 2 decent rears

Recent service (I have done the last 2) with all filters replaced

A fresh MOT on it ready for the sale and to assure that the work I have done on it is up to standard.

I have done all this work myself with photographic evidence and receipts to back it up, does that count as a service history of some sort? The paintwork is fairly good, polishes up very nicely but lots of pitting in the front bumper from road rash. It pulls perfectly, changes gear slickly and feels very responsive. The car feels like it has done many miles less than the current milage suggests as everything is so fresh feeling, it's also very good on fuel and doesn't smoke much like other 1.9s seem to, just when cold but it soon stops when up to temperature. Downsides are, the headlights needs polishing as they are starting to look faded at the tops (I will try and do that), stone chips, alloys could do with a refurb, small dent at front of bonnet (not that noticeable) seams of drivers seat and part of rear seat have split slightly but otherwise good. There is a minor crank seal leak but it is so minor that the oil lever doesn't ever seem to change, I have never needed to top it up.

With all that in mind, what would you guys value it at? I've looked on Autotrader but can't seem to find much to compare it to but the feeling i'm getting is £1800-£2000 but I don't know if the partial service history and the fact I've done the work makes a significant negative difference to value or not? I'm not sure how much difference it makes with all the new parts, the typical wear and tear bits for the high mileage are sorted/not an issue now, all expensive jobs are done really!
